Well, several corporations around my area have started making major layoffs. It started with mandatory vacations, then pay cuts. My dad was among the many people at the company he worked at that were laid off this afternoon. (He estimates that somewhere around 15-20 others in his department were given the boot today). The airport that I work at has been making me take vacation days because air traffic has dwindled to nothing and the airport can't afford to pay me to sit around because there's nothing to do. I'm glad I set aside several hundred bucks out of my paychecks this summer... Anyone else feeling the crunch?

My work days went down from 5 to 2 and this is supposed to be our busy season. My friend works at BMW in Manhatten and he says that last month they layed off 15 workers and they're planning on laying off another 20 or so within the next few months.

If you don't mind me asking, where did your dad work and what did he do, Snooze?

Also, yeah I'm from Alberta and with the price for a barrel of oil down to about... $45.00-ish now, we're seeing this. I know some higher-ups who got laid off, as well. Now that's scary.

He worked for Crown, an electric forklift company, and he was in over-the-phone service and support.

I'm still being scheduled for more hours than I put that I'm willing to work. does that answer your question?
no I am not really affected. many of my coworkers are though. I feel sorry for them, they should have done a better job kissing as and faking productivity.

I'm too good at my job to be laid off. No one stacks shelves like I.

same here. plus my store is still profitable, and theyll have plenty more hours once they lay off all their seasonal people. they normally keep a few but I don't think they will be this year... just a guess though...

    Central.

Alberta is geographically big, but in terms of population it's not, so you hear about a lot of the problems.

Fort Mac breaks even at $45.00 a barrel. If it goes lower then they lose money. That's an uh-oh.

Well I'm lucky enough to be in a job where people need us...so we are busy nonstop.

    Thank you viruses. Amen.

Sometimes it's not how good you are at your job or how busy you appear to be. Sometimes people just lay you off. They'd rather have a family friend working then a stranger y'know? For example I'm probably one of the fastest five guys in my job. I can get you done with your reservation in about a minute and forty seconds compared to the average three and a half of other phone operators. That's quite the difference especially when working with VIP accounts, but that still doesn't mean I'm not under the microscope when it comes to saving the company money. My boss would rather have his two daughters working at the company then myself. It saves more money.

Also, I'm not in a big corporation so...guess I don't have to worry.
