Okay, my cousins and I talk about Music a lot and we always argue. I like bands such as Slipknot and Bring Me The Horizon and he like Nine Inch Nails and TOOL.
He says stuff like "Slipknot has no talent" or "The screaming in BMTH is gay" and so on.

What I am getting at is, I listen to the music I do because I like the lyrics, I can relate to them and it's how I feel. I listen to music for the emotional connection, which does not make me emo. I don't like bands like NIN or TOOL or Cannibal Corpse because the lyrics are most of the time, meaningless and are about drug use or killing people.

So I guess, why do you listen to music? for the lyrics? for the beat?

Why would a Tool & NiN fan bag out Slipknot? Thats beyond me.

I love music. Without it, I wouldn't be who I was.

    I listen/play music:
    ● To pass time. (InFlamez, Slipknot, Metallica, KSE, Disturbed, etc lots moar)
    ● To chill/mellow out. (Jimi Hendrix, Zeppelin, Tool)
    ● To wake myself up (Subliminal Verses ftw)
    ● To make me hyper (Slipknot, Pendulum, Van Halen, Muse)
    ● To make myself sleep (Opeth's Damnation album ftw)
    ● To help me think, (Bach, Mozart, Caccini, Paganini, Vivaldi, etc)
    ● To makez me laff (Flight of the Conchords, Tripod, etc)
    ● To make me think I can understand foreign languages (B'z, lolwut?)

Basically for the emotional connection like he said.

I personally listen for the emotional connection as well, although I like some songs that have nonsense lyrics because it's fun and it's a change. I also listen to music for inspiration. That's a big factor to music for me. Inspiration.

I do listen to lots of different types of music. I think if you have a good message in your songs, 75% of the time I will like it. As BabyLeo said, inspiration is big part aswell. I'd love to make songs and be the next Chipmunk or Wiley (MC's) or be in an awesome thrash band like Municipal Waste. Alot of songs can give you that rush, and I like that too.

I think to sum up my opinion in music something Liquid says:

I'm just gonna say now, for the record, if you listen to Slipknot and BMTH for their lyrics but put down NIN, TOOL and CC for their lyrics then..

You obviously don't know what any of these bands are singing about.

Slipknot and BMTH sing about love, hate, loss and death.

TOOL sings about drugs!!! and Cannibal Corpse about killing people and such.

I'm not even going to start about NIN but I know a handful of songs are about sex, something Trent doesn't do very often.

so you're not bothered by the fact that Slipknot and BMTH's lyrics are mostly unimaginative ----? Wow, love hate loss and death, that's something that's not been done before and is totally meaningful.

Tool don't exclusivly sing about drugs, NIN don't sing exclusivly about sex. Cannibal Corpse, yeah it's pretty much about violence but it's awesome so it's okay. Slipknot and BMTH have a lot of ----ty, meaningless songs. Most of them actually.

I bet you're one of those people who thinks "You cannot kill what you did not create" is really profound. Balls.

I'm sorry if my life isn't perfect and stuff happens that I don't know how to deal with it. I don't get how they have unimaginative or meaningless songs? Last time I checked dealing with the loss of a friend or trying to mend a broken heart, meant something.

This is nothing to do with your life. Don't be pretentious.

Just because the subject of a song is death doesn't mean it's suddenly profound and meaningful.

"OHHHH MY CAT DIED MY CAT DIED MY CAT DIED IM SAD CAUSE MY CAT DIED MY CAT DIED MY CAT DIED FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK MAKES ME SAD CAUSE HES DEAD MAKES ME SAD DIED IN BED MAKES ME SAD LOST HIS HEAD OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

there, I just made a song about my cat dying. It's still bull---- though.

The reason why I listen to music is because I CAN RELATE TO IT BECAUSE OF MY LIFE.

    Missed that part didn't you?

You do know most of the stuff slipknot sing about is bollocks? And ALL of the stuff bmth sings about is.

Also, I seriously doubt you have THAT much to relate to in slipknot/bmth lyrics. Almost everyone else who I speak to who claims that is just mega-emo so I'm just gonna have to place that assumption upon you too.

Edit: By bollocks I mean made up, not just ----ty. Although it is ----ty too.

Word. All the Slipknot fans I know are some of the most musically ignorant people that I've ever seen. The kind that constantly say "I hate rap!" then I hear their car go by in the parking lot blasting Linkin Park through their ----ty stereos with overwhelming bass levels.

EDIT: Back on the topic though, I listen to music for nostalgic purposes. For example, When I Come Around by Green Day holds a lot of my 10-14 year old memories of skateboarding when I lived in Fresno, CA.
