On the toolbar, select the Dither box. Like this: See, the Dither and Transparency boxes are both checked. Make sure they are and it should work well.
I hate when that random faceting happens. I usually happens to me when I use the poly lasso and dodge+burn tool together. I've never figured out how to fix it(except for trying to blur it).
I tried dither+transparency. I still get the tonal jumps. Although it seems that sRGB has best tonal variation for gray variations. Gaussian blur doesn't solve it either. It might be that Gaussian blur masked the problem. I'm playing with it on a large scale, and it's not helping it any. Use sRGB, convert to 16 bit channel. Won't get rid of it all, but it helps. Just know that when you save it... your image is going to be huge. Maybe I just have a crappy monitor that can't show much variation, but I seriously still see the messed up gradient after gaussian blur. It actually made it worse... Not sure why. It's not so bad with a small color variation, but going from black to white just doesn't work for me. It'd probably be fine if I saved it as a low quality jpeg though, lol.
I've switched around several times between everything adobe has to offer. It just has crappy white to black gradients. Color seems to be fine. If I were you, I'd probably add a little more color into it. I don't know why RGB can't handle luminosity very well. Or do what UA suggested. From what I've seen, the only time that CMYK will help you is if you colors are closer to being subtractive than additive (cyan, magenta, yellow). I noticed that when I went from a straight blue to a more cyan color, RGB got all screwy. When I changed it to CMYK, it made it look better. However, CMYK couldn't handle the deep blue color I'd select in RGB and totally messed up the colors as well as the gradient. Your colors should be safe to convert to CMYK. Try it out, see if it helps. Also... don't save as a jpeg if you have a gradient. Ever. It'll ruin everything you did. I just compared the gradient I made before and after, and jpeg seriously killed it.
Both Dither and Transparency were ticked so I saved it as png and it looks alot better tho there are still faint rings. Oh, maybe a gradient mask with a brush will work! I don't know, I have to leave for school in a minute, so I can't check. Ambiguity might be onto something here (something that should have probably been obvious to us...) Oh, and thanks for the credits and +rep
