    Hey guys, I purchased an HP computer about 2 years ago. Recently it started to randomly freeze, caused problems, etc.
    One day when I turned on my computer it couldn't start, the DOS menu would show up (black screen) and it would say that a windows file was corrupt. It gave me the option to recover my PC.

    Now, there were 2 choices I had
    1) Recover PC but keep data files
    2) Restore to factory settings

    I chose number 1 because I do not have a backup of my data files (my documents, etc). So it took 30 minutes, than I turned on my PC after it, and MY DATA FILES DISSAPEARED. Am I not looking in the right place for them? Did they dissapear?

    Now, important to note: ALL my programs are still here from before the backup that I had installed (such as some games, etc) AND they even have my username appeared in them...

    I NEED TO GET ACCESS TO THOSE FILES, ITS VERY IMPORTANT.

    Need some fast and good replies ASAP,
    Thanks.

    Maybe its on a backup partition? Look under my computer, and see if there is a partition to check out.

    If it's XP I believe they will be in

    C:\Documents and Settings\{the old username}

    I think but I'm not 100% sure

    Yes, I am running Windows XP.
    I checked that, and my old username was: HP_Administrator
    (That's the default one it comes with)

    And when I reformatted my PC, the same username was used (since it was the default), so that directory is empty...

    Oh noes, man. This is serious, aye. What you need to do, and fast, as every second that passes will be halving your chances of success, is go into Start >> cmd then...
