To make this interesting, let's say... Who are your Top 3 favorite guitarists and why?

    Me (Not in order):

    1. Michael Angelo Batio - He has very jazz influenced playing but play lightning fast. His music is very inspiring and enjoyable. He also makes guitar lesson DVD's for guitarists to learn how to play very fast, warm-up for playing that fast, and to learn Jazz phrases.

    2. Dimebag Darrell Abbott (Rest In Peace) - He has a very unique playing style.Though I was not too fond of his tone, he was very creative. A lot of times he would play at specific tuning, such as a quater step down... He was also my inspiration to start playing.

    3. Carlos Santana - His guitar playing inspires a lot of emotions. He is also a very creative guitarist. I love how he will play with several musicians and every song he creates is a masterpiece.

    Satch, Vai, Petrucci,

Jimmy Page would come 4th probably, and then IDK who would be next, can't really think of many right now. But Satch is ftw.

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai aren't very musically adept in my opinion. They are great guitarists, but their songs (or should I say Steve's songs, some of Joe's aren't so bad) are basically flow-less solos.

    My top 3:

Eddie Van Halen - Now here is a technical guitarist who can dish out actual music as well.
Jimmy Page - Not much of a need for explanation here. He co-wrote most of Robert Plant's songs. Great guitarist.
John Petrucci - Definitely not as talented as most, but very interesting play style. Anyone who can basically solo for 40 minutes deserves a spot up here in any case.

I'm just going to add one in here. Guitarists are a dime a dozen, as many of the greats play almost uniformally, but I would have to say that Thomas Erak is my all time favourite guitarist.

His technique is amazing (perhaps not as polished as guitarists such as Page, Satriani, Santana etc), but he's only 22. His early work as the Thirty Years War is an insight to his brilliance, as he was writing amazing material at the age of 16-17. His playing is totally unique, and his live show is amazing and unrivalled. If you haven't already, check out The Fall of Troy on youtube.

This video here is a good example of his ability. He's the vocalist/guitarist.

Tom Delonge - If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have ever picked up a guitar in the first place.

Billie Joe Armstrong - Same as Delonge, One of my first influences.

John Mayer - After I started playing, I got into his bluesy style. I can't get enough of it.

    Lee Ranaldo.

    End of discussion.

Oh yes, why. The use of alternative tuning, the Moonlander (a guitar with 18 strings - 6 being normal, and the other 12 sympathetic). His contributions to Sonic Youth alone is proof enough to support Thurston Moore's statement, "When you're playing in standard tuning all the time ... things sound pretty standard" 100%.

Thurston Moore's also up there, obviously.
