I predicted it before, when I said HD was going to beat Bluray. I was wrong in that sense but Bluray will be beaten by the newest competitor, RDM (Royal Digital Media).

With 100Gb's per disc, The ability to display 1920p, and prices as cheap as regular DVD's and Players. Sony is going to have a hard time killing off this big dog. All of this coming to you in the first quarter of 2009, feels bad for those of you that got suckered into buying a Bluray player. Atleast us with a PS3 will still have gaming capabilities.

I'll inform you more on this upcoming Juggernaut as the information comes to me. Get ready boy's and girl's, It's time to take a ride to the future of digital viewing.

I don't think people with Blu ray players will be that downed about it, it may take a while for this new version to take off so there will be life in the Blu rays yet.
Personally I think if you got Blu rays just stick to them all the films are coming out for blu ray now and there will always be new technology coming out to beat it. If you are going to relases new technology you don't do so just to kept up with the leader you do so to over take the leader.

Over all when this RDM is out blu ray will still be about :)

I don't believe that, I don't even believe Blu-ray will be the next standard form. Currently Blu-ray hasn't fully penetrated the market. DVD's and DVD players are still the top selling entertainment systems. I know alot of people, I'll say about 100 people I see or talk to every week*, and only 25% of them own a system that can play Blu-ray media, and only 1% own something other then a Play Station 3. RDM has set out to take over, not just to win. Giving you something cheaper with more space in a time that people are trying to save money.

    Eamples;
    $15 > $30 (I rounded up from $27)
    $70 > $250

The top example is the rounded up cost of most Blu-ray movies. Most Blu-ray movies are expensive.
The bottom is a example of the cost of the players that is need to run the media discs.

Now to quote something from the engadget comment area.

*I don't count my friends, I just used this as a example it may be more or less.

I don't expect everyone to buy Blu-Ray or RDM just yet. The dvd is just too convenient and affordable right now. And if I had a choice of either getting blu-ray or RDM, I'd go with blu-ray because of the PS3 (which I have).

Haha, I love it when people think that these battles actually come down to the specifications of the disks. If you were wrong the first time, I fail to see how you will be correct the second time, especially as most of the information you're basing this opinion off is pure speculation.

HD DVD was a superior product. Higher capacity, cheaper to produce, cheaper players, better codecs, lower royalty codecs, but none of that matters. It's all about who openly will support a format, and with so many companies boasting to have the "Next breakthrough in home theater technology", no one really gives a f*ck about what marketing claims. I really don't think they'll be shipping units with outputs of 1920p. I'd be surprised if they don't pay more than that in technology licensing alone. Not to mention somehow they'd have to give producers millions of dollars worth of payouts for them to even make 1920p media to put on these fabled "RDM" disks.

Also, there are currently NO consumer based television screens available that support 1920p. You'd be forced to buy a 30in PC monitor, which only the very highest models could actually be used as a TV. Anything below a S-IPS standard panel would be unusable as a TV due to viewing angles. Sure, I think everyone will happily buy a new $2-3k television, just so they can get a cheaper media player.

For someone who boasts such knowledge of the market, it seems strange you'd get yourself all in a twitter about a engadget blog post... LOL

Hehe, twitter, good one. I never said I was going with RDM as the winner. I'm just betting against Blu-Ray. Hell, I rarely even use disked media (excluding games, which pretty soon you will be able to download the newest release straight to your gaming system). Really the only time I use a disk is when I'm putting something on it, and I'd rather have a 100GB disk to write on.

Just because it says "1920p" doesn't mean you have to view it at it. 1920p is for the next generation of television.

Really I don't care, I just want the competition. Maybe then Sony will start making things cheaper, then make high capacity discs, and let the technology evolve from there. Competition is the driving factor of the business & technology world.

Also I never "boasted" about it. I just happily posted it.

Exactly, most people who buy BD have PS3's, I've rented Blu-ray movies because I have one, and anyone who buys a $250 player that only plays DVD's and BD is a complete idiot, I know harsh but it's true, If your going to spend that much on something atleast make sure its worth it. Most people can easily download HD-Movies, be it through they TV provider or online services, and they have the same quality. I'd buy a $250 BD Media Player, if it could play BD-R, HD, HD-R, DVD's, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and have a HDD with TiVo functions with 4 Memory Card slots. That would be well worth the $250.

All I'm saying is Competition will make it well worth our time.

You do realise vieweing 1920p outputs at 1080p is the equivilent of running a 1440x900 res monitor at 1200x800 res. You literally are warping the image to the point where it looks bad. Also, by the time "next gen" TVs are available, almost all "hardcore" media nerds (i.e. people who would fork out for high end home theater gear in the first place) will be using hard drive based media system. Hell, my HTPC only has a DVD reader in it. My main PC has a Blu-Ray drive which I picked up for less than $200NZ (equivilent of about $150US) and any Blu-Ray movies I rent/buy just get ripped straight onto the PC and sent to my HTPC which is also my home server/web server.

Also, just because a company boasts about the price and power of a product before release, does not mean they are legally bound to even come close to that mark. I think you're making one hell of an assumption if you actually think you're gonna get a complete system for $250. You may be too young, or not invested enough to know the history of electronics and computers, but ultimately, it's not the actual product that matters, but how much the company selling them can get using them. Should this format actually become a viable threat to Sony (which I highly doubt it will), Sony will drive it into the ground by exclusifying as much content as possible. The HD-DVD drives are all but unmarketable now, simply because there's nothing available for it. I seem to recall seeing this on engadget shortly after it was posted, but I didn't even take a second glance.

It's just the new Linux, MP3 player, or Xbox. It's easy to claim to be the Windows Killer, iPod Killer, or PlayStation Killer, respetively, but in the end, it's just a long game of marketing and economics. I wonder how long DreamStream can sell these units at a loss, should the need arrive for Sony to drop the prices. I wonder whether DreamStream can pay the licensing fees for the different codecs and trademarks.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the first, and last you'll ever hear of RDM.

Regardless of how much success it has, it's still not a PS3 killer, and I was more referring to the hype when the original came out. And that does help prove my point. One significant reason that Xbox360 was a success was because of Microsofts dominant size compared to Sony.

I would think the massive overpricing of the ps3 and lack of quality games in comparison to the 360 would be two good reasons.

The fact that nintendo have risen to the top this generation despite being the smallest company also seems to prove your point wrong.
