How do I remove the black background on renders? I know that it's got something to do with the channels, but I can't figure out how to do it.

    Any help is appreciated.

It depends on what type of "render" it is. If it's a real render(from a 3D rendering program) and they saved it in tiff format you can double click your BG layer to turn it into an unlocked layer, then you should be able to go to channels, CTRL+click the alpha channel, go back to your layers, press CTRL+shift+I(inverts the selection), the press backspace. If there is no alpha channel but your going to set the blending option to something anyway go ahead and do it, the black will dissapear(as long as it's on top of another layer).

Now if it's a stock cutout and it has a black BG the only thing you can do is try the magic wand tool, but that rarely gets good results.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of rendering?

If I take a render off of the GameRenders Gallery here and the background isn't transparent, but black instead, there's nothing I can do?

Finishing your sentence is probably a good idea.

It isn't working well enough. There's got to be some way to remove the black background on a render; rendering would be completely pointless otherwise.

you can only do this when the person rendering has selected an Alpha layer, if it does then go to the channels tab and hold ctrl and click on the layer, this should select the c4d and then you can move it into the tag w/o background

Thanks for the good advice. Unfortunately, with both renders in C4D and render stocks I can't seem to get the alpha channel when I know I should be able to...

i tried this, it works alright for me but imma stick to what Ambiguity said.

go to the layers channel and then go ctl+shift and click the RGB layer a tonne of times. still holding shift ctrl hit the green and blue layers too. then go back to the layers and duplicate it. its not the best but most people change their settings on the c4D so it should be algood.
tell me what you think. this solved my problem ( didnt read b4 posting i guess )

EDIT: only tried on C4D's with black background. try testing on normal renders, if thats what u reffered to witht he top post )

Yes it does defeat the purpose, it's just an "oopsie" on the "renderer's" part.

The only time a cutout would have an alpha channel is if the cutter "made" one, which I have never seen anyone waste their time doing. If it's a C4D render then it will only have one if they saved it like that in C4D(but like I said earlier it should be in tiff format, and I think targa works too).

don't copy and paste it, right click, save it and then open the saved file in photoshop
