    Hi there

Finally I get some time to try out sports / activities that I like, don't know why but, I like them .

I have time after school almost everyday, and on Fridays I have tons and Sat and Sun. So I was wondering which is better? Guitar Lessons or Boxing Lessons.

I know for me either is good but Boxing Lessons are better in a way since they will keep me active and it is better in the long run. Guitar Lessons are on the side note which are just for entertainment and I can learn that even If I am 50 years old right?

Haven't found a place where I can learn either so do you guys know of any good places in Palo Alto, California where I can find some good Boxing or Guitar Lessons? Searched online but found nothing (I know how sad)....So Halp?

How about you save your money, and learn to do one or the other.

If your a pussy, boxing won't help you're situation, if your not a pussy then it won't help your situation. This is especially true if you are out of shape or don't have the time (and by time I mean a few hours daily) to dedicate towards not only getting into shape, but keeping up your shape. Oh yeah, by the way, boxers require some of the most endurance training of any branch of athletes in the world.

Your best bet is guitar lessons, which are remarkably easy to learn by yourself with free things you can find online, I would know, its how I learned to play nearly... 8 years ago or so.

Any martial art is going to take time and commitment. Judo for me is three nights a week, two hour lessons. Lots of running, push ups, calisthenics etc. in addition to Judo-specific exercises (practicing the positions, things called "shrimping," which mimics how you get out of a pin). We do one where we pull ourselves across the mat on our stomach with our fists, no crawling. It's a bitch. Lots of running with somebody in a fireman's carry, body weight squats with somebody on your shoulder. We do an hour of exercise before we even get to the fun stuff. Most martial arts take a lot of endurance; it isn't just judo. When I did the SubmissionSport competitions that David Ferguson helps put on, I fought a couple three-minute fights a piece, maybe fifteen minutes of fighting. And that beat the sh*t out of me a lot more than the practices do.

Why do you want to do boxing? Self-defense? Boxing's tough; I watch the guys at my gym go at it before the practice. If you're doing it for self-defense, I'd suggest a different martial art/sport.

    http://memphisbjj.com/styles/

That's my gym, and that page includes the styles we offer. Most of us cross-train in different arts, especially the MMA guys. Myself, I mainly do judo, though I've done a few lessons of BJJ to help with my ground fighting. All of them are good. For self-defense, I'd suggest something like Aikido or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Aikido is the ------ child of quite a few martial arts according to a friend of mine that takes it; involves some judo, some karate, some jiu-jitsu. I've never taken it, but I know people who have. It's supposed to be some good sh*t. BJJ is another good one; lots of grappling and throws. Most of the people I know suggest that for self-defense.

Filipino Martial Arts involves use of weapons from what I've watched; they use sticks (don't know what they're called) as well as training knives. Robin puts out a good program; most of his drills are situations with real-world applications as opposed to competition style(more traditional martial arts); I don't even know if they do competitions.

Keep your mind open if you're seriously considering martial arts. There are plenty of styles out there, and if you're in/near a city, there are probably dozens of gyms/dojos/whatever offering different stuff. It isn't cheap; I paid around a thousand for a year of judo, plus a hundred-dollar gi and a start-up fee. I was lucky enough to have my parents pay for it when I was younger; now I pay for it myself, around 80 bucks a month.

As for guitar, I tried that once. I got a cheap guitar at a pawn shop, played for a while. Lost interest in it pretty quickly; playing music isn't for me. A decent guitar will run you a couple hundred bucks, and I don't know how much lessons will run you. There are plenty of free online lessons, plus guitar tabs/chords available on the internet. It's up to you.

Me, I say go for a martial art. You'll learn a lot about yourself doing it; the benefits are huge. You become confident in yourself, you get in shape, and you can kick ass if you want to. But I'm biased :). If you do opt for a martial art, commitment is a must. Most places I know offer lessons during the week; weekends are reserved for informal competitions or they're closed altogether. My friend's aikido dojo is open every day, and she trains five days a week. If you don't keep up with it, you won't get any better and you probably won't stay in shape. Keep this in mind.

Boxing lessons. Teach yourself guitar. Guitar lessons are a waste of money, boxing lessons aren't.

If you are already reasonably musical then learning the guitar by yourself will be no trouble.

Thanks for all the heads up guys.

I have already signed up for Beginning Judo for next semester at college, but for now I am looking forward to finding a place near my home where I can take boxing lessons. I don't know but I can teach myself guitar from where I stand, and it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Why I want to take boxing?
Well for tons of reasons but the ones that pop out at the top are:
    -Self Defence
-Gets your Stamina to the top level all the time
-Great way to stay in shape. Have you ever seen a boxer who has gone from being ripped and stuff to being a big fat ass? The techniques that you learn and if you keep doing them keeps you in shape, I know because my CS Buddy Derrek does boxing but he lives in Oakland and that is about 60 miles from my house, he takes classes next door and says that they are worth the long running times, pushups, a little bit of weight lifting (not required though), but mostly he is pacing himself for high stamina and other type of cardio workouts to keep it up. He says it is worth it and I know it is worth it so I need to find a place somewhere close by to get me one :D

That is my plan so far. And my homework for the weekend is to get a boxing gym or something next to my house (where I live) and find a nice place to learn how to box.

Not a big fan of martial arts, though Judo seems pretty fun as in our college they teach you how to pick someone up and throw them down  and also how to bring a guy down irregardless of his size :D

Lol, if you think Guitar gets chicks(which it does), then imagine Boxing, chicks love a man that can protect them more. Boxing all the way bro, or some type of fighting, I mean guitar is nice and it's something you can learn at your spare time but boxing is something that will come handy to you for your whole life and you don't need to make it big with fighting, it's for your own use, so it's never a waste of time. Then again that's just my opinion.

Just so you know, in a life or death situation...boxing means squat.

If you are in a fist fight, sure you will win but in most scenarios especially when the other person has a weapon or is not afraid to try anything to get you...

    I recommend Krav Maga.

you must be high off your ass if you pick boxing over guitar

boxers are useless merely used for entertainment and when they are injured they`re thrown out

guitarist is easily the best choice
