ok...i have 2 pcs, and both of them have messed up fps while playing games. i'm going to use the game called World of Warcraft as an example PC number 1 - this pc is 5 yrs old, and at minimum quality, i can run WoW at 11-12 fps tops. it has a pentium 4 2.80 GHz CPU, 512 mb ram, nvidia gforce fx 5200 card. windows XP what do i need to improve the fps to a "playable" number? better card? more ram? better CPU? PC number 2 - this pc is 5 months old only. but i run WoW with exactly the same fps as my crappy old one. 2 gb ram, athlon CPU with 2.20 GHz. i don't know about the graphics card, but it's better then the one on my other pc. Windows Vista i don't know...maybe my CPU isn't good enough to run a game with vista? it's lower than my 5 yrs old pc :S any help would be welcomed. thanks in advance
both need better cards the FX5200 is an abomination and it's likely you have an onboard solution in your new system
thanks. do you think a GeForce 8500 GT is good? the 1gb memory sounds good to me. edit: and another question...will that card be compatible with my 2002 pentium 4 (mother board right? i'm a retard in what's related to PCs)
8500GT is a total waste of money, given how cheep decent video cards are. I'd say, look towards a 9600GT if you can afford it. The 8500GT should manage WoW fine, but that's about it.
chances are a p4 system from 2002 would either have PCI slots or AGP slots. AGP is prefered over PCI in a case like that. your newer system SHOULD have a PCI express slot which is the best type of slot for cards now. note PCI-e and PCI are NOT the same they're completely different as far as compatibility is concerned. PCI-e cards to consider 8600 is the lowest I'd go they're like $5 more than an 8500. Also don't worry about how much vRAM is on a card, worry about what processing unit a card has. an 8800 with 320mb vRAM will be around 10-20 times as powerful as an 8400 with 1GB(or even 10GB for that matter) an HD 2600 would also potentially work. a 9500 is also OK. for the P4 system I'm not too sure depends on what slot you have. http://www.si87.com/Products/Videocards/ag...-pci-or-isa.jpg http://www.viaarena.com/images/articles/pcie%20002.jpg in this case you want PCI-e 16x on the new system and AGP for the p4 system
thanks for the detailed tips. i'll go for the 8600. a friend of mine has it, and it's perfect for what i do on the PC *goes to the pc store, as i'm afraid to blow up my pc while opening it*
and yet you're comfortable swapping out the battery in your cellular phone... ehh consumer ignorance makes me sad. it's so easy to install things it's not even funny.
Yes, but how are poor, innocent salespeople supposed to make their $100 if they can't install it for him.
