Hai, guise. I want an external hard drive on which to keep my movies, etc. I also want to be able to plug it into my xbox (for movies etc). In addition, I would like it be a reliable backup for all my stuff when I go to college.

I was thinking of getting a Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB. Have any of you had good or bad experiences with Western Digital's retail stuff (I say retail because odds are pretty good your current hard drive is Western Digital)?

I think WD is pretty good and it has a good quality history. I am also going to install an internal HDD from WD in my PC, that would be my second time but I really hope that it works nicely.

The WD Passport is a good external,
I worked at a computer store and the only type of external hdd's we'd sell were the Passports ONLY

plus WD usually comes with a lifetime limited warranty :D

so if it ever dies for some reason you might get it replaced free if you know what you're doing :)

I have horrible luck with Western Digitals and I think people mostly go for them because they're the cheapest ones. The only two WD's I've ever owned (one internal, one external by LaCie) have failed.

The next external drive I bought was a little 400GB Seagate paired with Icy Dock's FireWire enclosure. I've been on this setup for around a year and everything seems to be working fine. That, and should something go wrong, Seagate has the best warranty in the business right now at 3 years.

Here are some links to get you started:
    External Enclosures on Newegg.com
    Hard Drives on Newegg.com

Just remember that the type of enclosure you buy has to match your drive. For instance, don't buy a SATA drive for an enclosure that's made for IDE.

i wouldn't go w/ external WD or Seagate; I've had some issues with them. Internal i think their same shz like all other, good.
