Well I am using SBC, Yahoo DSL at this moment It is a 1.5mb/sec connection with 1.5mb/sec dl and 750kb/sec upload The problem is that the highest download speed that I get here is 100kb/sec and the highest upload that I have seen is 30kb/sec. I have never reached over 100kb/sec and not even close to the 1mb/sec download limit. Is there a way that I can get a new router or something that will let me download at 1.5 mb/sec? so I can actually fully utilize this speed or is there nothing that I can do to help my download / upload speed? I have a 2wire Gateway Modem. Every time I go to the gateway System - Summary site it says this: Broadband Link Connection Speed: • Incoming: 1536 kbps • Outgoing: 384 kbps But I never get that speed Do I need a new router or something? if so which one will work...? Thanks Zain EDIT: I just testing my dl speed and here is the summary
I have a 1 MB connection and so that means that I am suppose to get a download speed of 1 Mbit P/S right? But no, that is not what I actually get, just like you I get 100 KB p/s download rate exactly which rarely goes up to a max 120 KB and that too, not constant. I am assuming this is something that every ISP has limited their users to or maybe if there is someway to get the exact or a little less speed than what our connection has to offer us, I would love to read it. Also, one of my friend has a 2 MB connection and he gets a max download speed of 200 KB, my brother also 200 KB on a 2 MB connection and my other friend who has a 4 MB connection gets a 400 KB max download rate. Now lets see if it works, btw, I also have tried the speedtest.net and other speed tests on the Internet and have got the same results as you except, I've got 995 KB for download and 366 for upload speed.
Just remember, other people on your node, although should be minimal, will effect your speeds. Such as, i'll alway do my mass downloading at night, from around 12pm onwards to around 10pm the following day, because thats when most people are least active on the internet. Also, you have to remember you are paying for UP TO Xmbps, so don't expect full. Many many factors can affect speed, including quality of cables/dsl filters etc. This is my current speed: Location does play a part in it too, altho i jsut got almost identical speeds going to russia, say 1500miles or so away.
So you actually get around 6 MB downloading speed mate? Whoa! That's like way too much man.. What connection do you have?
just an ADSL line. Speeds vary throughout different countries too. UK is pretty good, but compared to the average speed of the states, isnt amazing. Speaking of way too much, a guy managed to hack his modem into giving him unmetered speed/bandwidth. Unfortunatly for him, this created a bottleneck for everyone else on his node. This flashed up on the ISP's system, and he was disconnected and banned within 6 hours or so. Subsqucently, he's now restricted to dial up speeds haha I'll try and find the article Thats pretty sweet, and you live nearer to the servers i d/l from lol
Ah.. That means if my brother switches to a 16 MB connection as he is already a user of NTL or something, he would get that download rate as well? Awesome and yeah EBK and Xen, that is something to be jealous of, I mean WOW!
Your brother in the UK? Well, he should be looking at alright speeds. But every ISP is different, and many contributing factors effect it. Distance from the telephone exchange would be the main one, asuming he is using ADSL line rather than cable(but i think ntl are cable?). If he switches to a a faster connections package, he may get increased speeds, but he is paying for UP TO 16mb. "BT estimating that around 78% of users on its lines can enjoy speeds up to 4Mb or higher." Oh, and Zainx, you are well in your right to ask your ISP for a new router. If they are reluctant, just say you will change providers, they'll send you one I got my tiscali wireless router for free, but just asking.
That is some crazy download speeds right there. I think that mine goes up to around 150 kb/sec for the 1.5mb connection. In addition, if I ask my isp for a new router will it help in gettting that 150kb/sec rate to around 200 or more. or will it won't be possible till i switch to comcast or something or T1...??? Zain
Well, a new router may or may not help. Chances are it won't be amazing results. but you could still try. I used to have a USB modem, the thing was ----, would die out on me on heavy d/ls. Not i have ethernet wireless router, it's sexy. All for just asking.
Why don't you just ask your ISP? They are suppose to know why it gives you that and they would also best suggest you a good router from outside or you may get one just the Leetmu did! ;->
