So I decided to upgrade to SP3 for the hell of it today. To make sure everything went smoothly I checked properties under My Computer and sure enough my processor speed is slower! I have a AMD Turion64 X2 1.86ghz processor (don't flame, I'm poor) Now my processor is sitting at 1.54ghz, and I don't understand, Is SP3 not compatible with some processors? Or is there a patch out there so I don't have to go find a M$ rep and punch him in the jugular? Any help is appreciated edit: Not as big of a problem, but I have 3gb DDR2 Ram and it shot down to 2.69gb's I'm about to find a way to revert back to SP2 if I can't figure something out.. Edit... again: Okay, now I'm confused, I just opened properties again and my processor was at 785mhz, i closed it and reopened it and it was at 1.81ghz, I've never known the speed of the processor to change under the properties tab.. is this something I was just never aware of?
What your probably encountering is Cool'n'Quiet (I think that's what it's called on AMD platforms, its EIST on Intel). This basically just drops the multi of your CPU down when the CPU is idling, to save heat and power. It'll shoot back up again the moment it encounters any load, so it doesn't negatively impact performance. You can easily turn it off in the BIOS, but to be honest, I wouldn't bother. Try launching a game or something that requires a bit of grunt and it should jump right back up.
that sounds about right, but I was running PS CS2 when it shot down to 785mhz, so I don't know if that is it.
i get something like that now and again in the sourceengine's detection, 3.2 AMDx2 examples of readings: 27mhz 150mhz 1.2ghz 1.9ghz 2.4ghz 3.1ghz and now and again 34.26ghz
like 34.00 ghz not 3.4? maybe i'm stupid, or behind in technology, but i've never seen a 34ghz processor lol
Download CPU-Z and Orthos. Run CPU-Z, and it'll tell you your CPU's speed, and what it's multiplier and FSB are. Then run Orthos which will start to stress your CPU. It should jump back to normal again while Orthos is running. Photoshop CS2 is hardly stressful on the CPU unless you're doing some filters on really high resolution images. Photoshop tends to be more demanding on the RAM. Also, post back a screenshot of the first tab in CPU-Z and I can probably tell you what's up.
I'm on it boss, first thing I did was throw up CPU-Z to see if I could spot anything this is while running orthos, I can't find anything wrong... maybe my processor had an off day lol Again no flaming please, I' m still poor lol
Okay, I forsee two possibilities, A) It's simply a bug in your CPU/BIOS causing the CPUID to show incorrectly under Windows B) It is the EIST in your motherboard, however it should drop back down shortly after you stop Orthos going. Either way, you're not losing performance/stability.
yeah there isn't a 34ghz, the speed reader just ------s up abit your core speed readings show 1.80ghz which probably accounts to cool'n'quiet
