Any clients I've had have contacted me directly (Usually through/after finding DA.)
Helps to at least get yourself a proper portfolio website up and then affliate with other people, spend a bit of money on some web-advertising (and local advertisements)

I get work via word of mouth generally. I get a lot of repeat business and a lot of the individuals I do work for have many web master friends who own multiple sites, etc.

What kind of work are you looking to do? Maybe I can help you out with a few pointers.

like dem said, word of mouth is really good. make some friends who are in the business and just casually mention that you design.

    EDIT: sweet. satanic post count.

You have to start on the bottom and work your way up, until you have a reputation your not going to get work for multiple hundreds of dollars unless your portfolio is absolutely astounding.

Going into a business arrangement with the thought process of, 'my work is more than good enough to fetch said amount' is not the way to go about business in the design field, these people work with people better than you on a daily basis who will cut them deals for being repeat clients and those people are a for sure thing to the clients. I did web designs worth hundreds years ago that would have been impossible to sell without my current portfolio and rep, so they sold for less, I got repeat business, as my portfolio and clientel improved my prices went up, thats how business operates.

You won't get business going into an interview with a standard portfolio and very few references and very little if any reputation.

    Take what you can get.
