    Tried to improve my smudging efforts, worked on flow and depth more

    Dunno, the smudging is nice, but the tag looks unfinished, and it's lacking lots of efx.
    smudging only is not really the best for a sprite

    ^That pretty much sums it up. You have the flow right, now try adding some depth and fx around the sprite..
