    +++++++ METAL GEAR ONLINE++++++++
    = Published by: Konami
    = Developed by: Kojima Productions
    = Genre: Third-Person Action
    = Number of Players: 1 + Players online
    = Comes with every copy of MGS4

    Game Overview::
    -- Basically, you're a lone mercenary named "Solid Snake" who's part of a two-man operation to eliminate mobile nuclear weapons that have their own A.I. (Metal Gears). Your partner in crime is Otacon, a skinny white dude
    who hangs around your hi-tech plane in a neat-o lab coat ready to give you useless information whenever you call him up. There's also a creepy little girl hanging around your plane who can't cook eggs. Confused?
    Buy the game. Basically, you start the game off from where you left it in Metal Gear Solid 2 (Not exactly the easiest game to explain.) You've got several problems; you're a clone of the Big Boss (the character you
    play as in MGS3,) so you age much faster than normal people due to a strange mix of proteins in your body. You're still hunting your brother who...(this is from MGS2, so it makes no sense)...lives through his arm
    which has been attached to an old man known as "Revolver Ocelot" after you killed him (I mean the rest of his body) in MGS1. During this time period in the game, which is the 'non-too-distant future', the world revolves around war in which
    all the soldiers have implanted nano-machines that regulate and observe everything about everyone. The leaders of these machines are the PATRIOTS/La-Li....something...it's stupid because, again, it was introduced in MGS2,
    and nothing from MGS2 makes any sense. You're called in to investigate the appearance from your brother (now known as Liquid Ocelot) in the middle east and hilarity ensues.

    Gameplay::
    --In a game like this, where your precision of stealth is key, controls need to be very fine. Luckily, Splinter Cell got them right and by now Double Agent is cheap enough to get off the discount rack. But to MGS4's credit, the
    control have been redone from MGS2 and 3 and are now much more like the ones in Gears of War and Grand Theft Auto 4. But that's not exactly the best news because GEoW and GTA4 are not games in which you sneak around
    They focus on blowing stuff up while this one focuses on avoiding all that. So while yes the control are much nicer than the ones in the previews games, they're not perfect. Also, one of the staples of the MGS franchise is gone.
    The minimap no longer shows the cone of vision of enemies. I can't talk for everyone else, but most of the tactics I made in MGS1 2 and 3 used those cones because of the limited camera controls, but now just because I have control
    of the 3rd person camera I feel as though the game is empty of that key tactic that made it worth playing even with crap controls in the last few games. The A.I. in this game are smarter in this once than in the previous too. And by
    that I mean they have better vision so they could spot you even if you're at 85% stealth (Splinter Cell visibility meter). They use group formations to outmaneuver you and have powerful close combat moves if you get a little too
    close. Luckily, because this game is now less about stealth and more about war (<strike>Tactical Espionage</strike> Action) you're given an extensive arsenal of killin' tools to generally wipe the floor with anyone pointing a gun at you (You get
    a bazooka in the first level, so you have to think deep and hard about how you want to play the game.) Lastly, there's this one problem that's bothered me throughout the entire game. There is no load button anywhere other than
    the main menu. If you're like me and have played the other MGS games, you feel compelled to play by the ideas set by the previous games and to try to be as stealthy as possible. Unfortunately, because of the A.I. that hears and
    sees everything, you basically have either keep playing through once you've been discovered and try to hide (which most of the time ends up being about luck) or exiting out completely to the main menu.

    Video::
    --You buy a PS3, plug it into your 10 year old T.V. that needs to heat up before it shows the colors correctly and you play the game. Sure, that'll work, but you wouldn't be playing this game, you would be playing a much different
    game. What I've gathered from my experience playing this game is that it's about the presentation. The game is basically 4/5 movie, and you want to be able to see that movie well. To experience this game the way that Hideo Kojima
    and his merry men promised, you need to hook it up to a HDTV, set your PS3 to 1020p and enjoy. I don't care what anyone else says, this game is not about the gameplay, it's not about the story, it's about the presentation. It's
    about the anti-aliasing, the particle effects, the shadows, the way the water moves, and the way the sky looks. Take that away, and this game becomes just another game. You remember Turok? It came out not a while ago, it didn't
    look like this, that's why I had to remind you of it.

    Audio(Video part 2)::
    --The video shows you this world of Metal Gear, but that wouldn't be enough without the audio. As soon you get to the first screen you get a view of Snake at the cemetery and you think it's kinda depressing, the colors are strange,
    you don't know what to feel, and then the guitar starts to play. And you know what to do. The soundtrack by Harry Williams does a great job of putting the pressure on and the sound effects from the various (and plentiful)
    explosions, gunfire, and cries during battles help immerse you into this experience. It will sound the same to someone on a TV or and HDTV without a surround sound system, but if you have one, you're in for a treat, just make sure
    not to wake the neighbors. My one gripe is that while the explosions and the bullets wizzing by sound great, Solid Snake sounds annoying, not bad, David Hayter (the voice actor) did a good job, but not pleasant the way that the rest
    of the game is horrible but awesome.

    Story::
    --I know that Hideo Kojima is regarded as a genius because he was able to clean the storyline mess in this game that he created in MGS2, but like I said before, I wouldn't suggest you buy this game for the story, because if you want
    a good story, read a book. This game is about the presentation, the way that this game has big walking tanks that sound like cows and dudes with super ninja suits and dudes with camouflage spy gear is how the game is supposed to
    bring you in, but if you come for the story, and you want to unscramble the mess from the past MGS games, and to try to make sense of it all, then this one will do you justice. For the western audience (Hi America, Bonjour England)
    this game will definatly seem just a little bit Asian. Hideo Kojima wrote the storyline to be a big boy game, but hints of JDrama and sections of the game where the camera seems to be glued to cleavage are present. Also there's a bit
    of childish humor involving an oil drum and diarrhea in the beginning of the game. The characters sometimes overact and the women seem to become desperate housewives as soon as they're within 10 feet of Snake (That's like 15 m.
    in U.K....I think.) The game deals with chaos, love, politics, but most importantly it's about the "Greater Good," and to what extent humanity will go to achieve the greater good until it loses its humanity altogether. At least that's what I got from
    it. The story has been written in fairly black and white terms, so everyone playing would should understand who all the good guys are and who all the bad guys are, which makes it all too easy to side with Solid Snake and just regard
    all of Ocelot's plans as "evil," but if you're playing, you can try to immerse yourself deeper by going that little extra step.

    Metal Gear Online(not counted toward overall verdict)::
    --1) Login to Konami website (Provided you've already got a PSN id)
    --2) make Konami and MGSO ids
    --3) get off PS3 and activate e-mail on your computer
    --4) Join game while wondering why you needed to make an account if you still don't plan on buying anything.
    --What MGSO has going for it is that it isn't trying to go for the Tactical Espionage bit at all. It's all about the guns and the shooting, which is good because there's a lot of it. If everyone isn't camping all the sniper spots. The strange thing about this
    online game is that it's got build in Aimbot. Auto-Aim basically does the aiming for you if you press the square button. What it also does is make the game irritating and boring. There's a thing about the game that makes you feel that you should play together, but that usually doesn't happen because everyone wants to just go and shoot everyone else. At least on the servers that I've been on. Good news is that connections seem to be strong, and lag remains sparce, right up until you get disconnected from the PSN due to an "error."

    The Final Verdict::
    --This is not a hardcore game. I would not suggest you buy it for that. Consider this like you would a movie, except this one has much more complicated menu screens where you have to walk from brilliantly set up menu to brilliantly
    set up menu to get to the video bits and enjoy the show. The gameplay is good but flawed and the controls can be difficult, but you probably won't notice because you'll be looking at the scenery and listening to the birds and the
    guns. I say, it's a good game for someone ready to enjoy the beauty of it, and for anyone who's a fan of the storyline that wants to see the final chapters of Solid Snake's career, but be warned that without an HDTV and an HDMI
    cable, you'll be missing out on what makes MGS4... MSG4.

    FACT: Your opinion means nothing to me.

    Wut?

    Nice review otherwise. Have you even played any of the other Metal Gears or Metal Gear Solids?
