Hi, I just picked out a cheap processor. I wanted to know if it's right for the price, which is pretty cheap.

Edit: After i found out that my mainboard only supports single core, I've decided to rethink which one i want. However, i picked a similarly cost efficient single core.

Oh, and does anyone know if Newegg has reduced shipping rates for multiple purchases?

And how can you tell if your computer is AM2 or socket 939?

Edit: I just got myself worried. I wonder if my Mainboard can even handle this CPU. It's hard to find info about it because it's from i think 2004, but it's a VIA KM400 chipset. I'm even having a hard time finding info about it on the VIA website. (www.VIA.com.tw)
Can anyone help? I think i ask for help too much sometimes haha. I'm just worried that it won't work once i buy it.

Edit 2: YES! I FOUND THE MAINBOARD MANUAL! I didn't even know i had it, must have come with the computer when my mom won it. it says it supports AMD athlon/Duron single processor family, So i guess i'll have to look for a single core. Thanks for the help everyone! (lol)

well would it be worth upgrading from the 1.8ghz current one to 2.4ghz? This will be used for casual gaming, not incredibly intensive ones.

all 939 boards SHOULD support dual core CPUs though they might require a BIOS flash.

FYI AM2 didn't exsist until 2006 so no worries on that.

as for how to tell, check RAM typic, if it looks like it's using DDR1 it's 939 if it's DDR2, then it's AM2.

and my advice for you... just overclock what you've got. it should hit 2.4 pretty easily.

well it's DDR1, so i guess it is 939. And the mainboard said it only supported single core. And, how do you install a dual-core versus a single core? is it physically two different CPUs? or will it just go in the same place as the last single core?

check via's site for a new BIOS which would add compatibility. it's not guaranteed to exist but worth looking for.
also it sounds like it said it only supported a single processor. as in you can't use two separate CPUs.

actually i looked, and i wasn't sure if it was an update. the date for the BIOS was the same as the one i have says. and it's dated '03.

Edit: Oh, and I had to go to Biostar's (motherboard maker) website to find the BIOS.

if u have about 200 bucks u can get a nice am2 duel core, new mobo, and ddr2 800 ram (2gb)

just saying, if u have the money, upgrade, dont waste time upgrading an older socket

could you possibly recommend which ones i should get for $200? it's for my sister's computer, so it'll be her choice if she wants to spend the money, i just want to show her the options as to what she can do instead of buying a whole new computer.

whoa whoa whoa whoa. hold on there cowboy. 2gb ram for $30? i'm gonna need a link to believe that one.

Edit: Jeez i have a lot of questions. sorry. okay, how does this look:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813138116

Looked pretty cost efficient. but it has a strange cpu socket. and if it says it has PCI-E slots, does that mean a video card would use pci-e slots instead of an agp?

And um, i'm still looking for a video card, so if you could provide one that would somewhat match it. i'm not sure too much what to look for in a video card, like what really makes it better.
and here's one i was looking at, it's pci x16 and, correct me if i'm wrong, would work with the board i picked out.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814162006

    thank you!

Edit 2: Okay, i was looking at CPUs. This one is compatible with the board i picked out right?

Okay, this is hard playing tag. You posting, then i post a while later, then you post a while later. Do you have AIM or something so we could have a conversation?

board you found has 3 PCI slots, a PCI-e x16 slot and two PCI-e x1 slots.

    2GB ram for around $40ish...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227060
    with a $25 rebate...

if she has no plans of 3d gaming...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814500027

if she likes 3d gaming and doesnt need much power(think WoW, or CSS or DoomIII, HL2 maxed out, and games like oblivion or Gears of war on mediumish)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814127330

if she wants a dang solid gaming experience
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130332
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814103051

and from what I read I don't think I need to look higher though if I did, 4850

or if she has no intention of gaming at all, a board with onboard video
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813186132

or if you have a video card in the current system, just migrate that over...

for bang/$ without gaming, that's around 70+50+15 + tax and shipping, or right around $140ish all in all. with gaming in mind, a bit more but that's not a must.

Thanks for everything. However, I've got a question. Does that RAM you picked out work with the p31 board? it says it supports ddr2 800, and the RAM is ddr2 667. And, i decided on the RX2600 Radeon, it looks pretty cost efficient. But yea, it looks good but just wondering if that RAM would actually work. I already found some that is the same price that's ddr2 800.
