    Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 89W Single-Core Processor - OEM

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116027

$80 and 3.0 GHz, is this really that good of a deal? or another crap CPU that will screw up after a few months..?

So opinions, good deal? or not?

EDIT: Ok, I read up a little, and it's actually 1.5Ghz processors thrown together, so it only show up on games as being 1.5Ghz ? o_O

So Now, i have to go lower,~2.2Ghz

    Intel Pentium E2200 Allendale 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

I'll take a dual core over a single core everytime.

    the answer is no.

GHz aren't the only thing that matters.
pentium 4s are very inefficient. Yes it runs at 3Ghz(not 1.5, 3ghz) but it has a really long pipeline and few functional units so it's very inefficient.

my core 2 duo @ 2.13Ghz is as much as three times as fast as that pentium 4 in some instances, and at the 3.6Ghz I have it running at day to day it absolutely blows the p4s out of the water.

    this is a better CPU
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116052

on average it's around 20% faster than that p4 in single threaded aps and 140% faster in multi threaded aps.

    to put this into perspective
    [IMG]

a pentium 4 is literally HALF a pentium D. a pentium D has two pentium 4s within it, so do the math there.

in conclusion p4s suck balls and were a huge mistake by intel(FYI when they were released, the pentium IIIs were faster than the pentium 4s and continued to be so until the PIIIs were discontinued)

    I have a Pentium 4 (3.4 Ghz) ;(

I know this is kinda like thread stealing but whats a decent (200-300$) CPU I can get for this motherboard. Link

Here is your motherboard on newegg.
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16813131534

Can only go up till Celeron D
The only Celeron D I could find was this one
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116031

Other than that I would just get a new motherboard, new Processor,
it will be cheaper and also will work for a couple more years

im buying an aftermarket cooler, and putting in a few extra fans, just not sure exactly where, and how cool it will keep it.

Please tell me if this is all i need to get a system running.

Do i need to buy any more cables, fans, ect. to get the thing running stock?

This is my first build, and to be honest Im a little scared, because I don't want to spend too much, want everything compatible , and want everything to be there when i start the build.

EDIT: and some arctic silver 5 thermal compound of course =)

and maybe a after market cooler, after i get it built I want to see how high i can overclock with the stock cooler, then maybe buy another later.

2.6-3.2 GHz on the stock cooler; 3.0-3.4 on a better one

    consider
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813127049
and an e2180(it's $10 cheaper and will OC just as far. to hit 3Ghz you only need 333FSB and the IP35 and DS3 both hit 400-500 relatively easily)

then put the difference into a heatsink

    Ok cool, thanks.

So thee2180 with heat sink will go father than the other without a arctic heat sink?

EDIT: Also is there any other cables, cords fanss, ect. that i need to buy to have a running PC?

yes. they're the same CPU in essence just the e2200 ha a 10x multi vs. a 9x mltiplier. higher multipluier CPUs require less capable boards and RAM to overclock, but in this case it doesn't matter.
