Actually, * on an internet message board, or search engine for that matter is usually to represent "wildcard" so it's not down to specifics, with more broad search results.

So therefore, his *chan was to specify "wildcard"chan so pretty much meaning any of the random chans out there.

i think of 2 things:

'fortune' ('4chan' sounds like the word 'fortune')

and Chan (like an Asian person, e.g. Michael Chan)

There are websites called "chans" such as: 4chan or 7chan. They are the dregs of the internet. Any dumb, racist, offensive joke you find here probably came from there. There are several of these websites (following the pattern *number*chan [e.g. 4chan, 7chan]). They can collectively be referred to as *chan. *chan is used to indicate any of those websites.

 

4chan is a website but has many sister sites. Therefore when people reffer to the chan network of sites rather then say them all they say *chan to represent every site in the network.

so basically *chan represents the network of "chan" sites
