I know the difference between bitmap and vector, but I'm not completely sure how to get a bit map image to a scalable vector image. Does anyone know if there is a way to do it through photoshop/illustrator or do I need a special program for it?

I'm not looking to make images like the one in my sig. I know how to vexel using pentool and such. Scalable vector images are used in some graphics (mainly logos) so they can be scaled into any size and not lose any quality (ie: zoomed in x300 and still have super clean lines.) That's what I'm looking to do. It can be done in vector magic, but for the file I would need, I would have to pay. I'm just wondering if there is a way around it :P

The latest Illustrators (I think CS2+) have a feature called Live Trace (Object menu). Using the tracing options provided, it creates vector traces from images Placed in your document. Results range from 'posterized' to 'pretty damn close'.

Expression 3 from Creature House (now a Microsoft product) has a similar feature called Auto Trace (Object > Bitmap).

Some sort of program that can save in .SVG I'm not sure of a program off the top of my head that can do that though... I would just suggest doing it yourself in Photoshop since you can't always rely on sites or programs to convert perfectly. Photoshop's pen tool (both shapes and paths) is scalable. That's if you don't delete paths or you don't resaterize shape layers. And since you already know how to vexel, it should be easy for you :D

Pretty much your going to have to vector it, but you can still do that in photoshop and have it still be scalable. What you do is vector your shapes but do not delete the paths after you make your shapes, I would suggest setting your pentool to "Shape Layers" instead of "Paths" that way if you decide to rescale the vector you don't have to refill in the colors. After you do that you can save one as a psd(this holds the rescalable paths) and a copy that you can actually post as a png.
