Yep so would quite like opinions on where I should download music from (and no "Bearshare, Limewire, Torrentz" crap...for once I want this legit lol). The two main contenders I know about are iTunes and Napster. Personally I'm verging towards Napster; about a year ago I tried both and found Napster to be intuitive, fast and the downloads good quality whereas I frankly hate iTunes software, so much in fact I never bothered testing their download service. It was too resource heavy, too annoying to navigate for someone who likes his tree based WMP layouts and frankly visually disappointing plus I found the whole podcast thing more hassle than worth (original reason I got iTunes). Still I'm willing to give it a second chance if it's worth it, and I already know that where I am (UK) iTunes is marginally cheaper + it's a lot easier to get rid of the DRM on iTunes downloaded tracks then Napsters. The only downside to Napster so far is that some albums just aren't available and some are idiotically priced (Cajun Dance Party atm is cheaper to download each track individually then the album as a whole...why???)

So which is it? Is the quality roughly the same (even with iTunes using a lower quality compression?) and how about service?

I think comparing those two, iTunes is what I would suggest you.

iTunes downloads are well organized and also very good quality. Their download rates are also very good.

Itunes is your best choice, I personally hate napster but itunes is simply and works great (especially if you have an ipod ^^)

I dont, nor ever will, own an iPod. Gotta say the more I check out iTunes the worse it seems; download quality of some tracks my friend got is frankly poor (128kbps I think is all they do...pft)

as for Rhapsody all I can say is "if only". Like amazonMP3 (now there's a promising service) I really like rhapsody but because I live in the UK I can't use it.

I always said I'd never own an iPod, yet 5 months later I love mine, and iTunes I've loved too, I'd say iTunes without a second thought.

Has anyone actually tried both services? Right now, despite everyone saying "iTunes" my bad feelings towards the program and annoyance and low quality is still pushing me away. Pretty much the only thing I can see going in iTunes favour right now is the ease of DRM removal.

Looks pretty interesting though I can't find anything that tells me what kbps the downloads are? Any ideas?

iTunes has a great interface (we use Macs on school, I'm in school right now..) but I don't know about the download function. But I can tell you that I find the usability of playing music is the best on iTunes.
