linux don't has a GUI? um.. lets see.. Linux is an OS which has a GUI. KDE don't have a GUI, KDE is one of the many GUI'S out there... same as gnome, fluxbox and others.. KDE is not an OS so u can't say KDE has a GUI...

You really should go to your local Apple store and play around some. I've been on the mac platform for 4 years and really love it, but it's not for everyone. You'll have the mac fanboys coming in here saying you should get a mac 'cause then you can run OS X or windows, but I really disapprove of that argument since it eats a good portion of your drive.

If, after spending some time with the mac, you like it better than Windows, then take the plunge, but it's not for everyone. Some people are just more technologically productive if they stick with what they know.

And if you want to play games, you might as well forget about the Mac platform. Same goes for Linux. They're just not up to par yet with Windows in terms of gaming.

Hope this helps... I can get more specific if you want?

My one big complaint with Apple is the fact that they are extorting their customers and they are selling you a shiny brushed aluminum box for 3, even 4 times the price of a PC with twice the power. I don't think that's right, and I don't know why people are buying into it.

Also, Apple continues to attack Microsoft (specifically) with their Mac vs. PC commercials....but it doesn't make sense, because Microsoft is just a software company.....why aren't they attacking HP? or Dell? or Intel for that matter...

KDE and GNOME provide a GUI for Linux then if you want to get technical. Oh, and Linux doesn't have a GUI, it has a terminal.

yes, but it's a shiny brushed aluminum box that works so well compared to 90% of the PC's out there. I'm willing to pay a premium for that. some people aren't, but usability is HUGE for me because I'm pretty much an idiot when it comes to computers.

The funny thing about apple playing into their "security" is the fact that Apple computers are some of the more vulnerable systems on the market.....they are just targetted less, for whatever reason. Also, Apple has a HORRIBLE history for patches and OS updates.

...Do you have any specific examples of this?
And don't use google. I mean have you REALLY ever had an ongoing problem with OS X that Apple didn't patch? Because in 4 years of using a Mac, I haven't. Sure, there have been little quirks (nothing new is perfect) but they've pretty much fixed every issue I've ever had (MBP keyboard lagging after upgrading to leopard, airport in leopard, iChat failing to connect for whatever reason, etc)

Windows on the other hand still fails to install updates that seem pretty necessary (like the .net framework. what's up with that?), still fails to see all 4 gigs of my RAM (it only sees 3? wtf?), still randomly drops my wireless connection when I'm on my school's network, still freezes for no reason when I plug in my external hard drive (I'm forced to restart. and it's only 400 gigs. huh?), and that blasted "System Restore" feature has never worked properly.
And this is all Windows XP, an OS that is how many years old now? six or seven?
So there are my specific examples. Where are yours?

    I'm referring to security issues.

took apple 3 weeks to fix safari.

3 weeks to fix an exploit that received world wide attention and to which the hacker gave apple documentation on what was used to do the exploit
    that's just bad

Being an Apple owner for as long as Crazy Horse has been, I can completely agree with what he says. It isn't for everyone. Gaming is out, but if you want to do a lot of media editing ie; working with Photoshop, creating movies, etc. I would go with Apple, if you want to game stick with a PC. The third party support is increasing for Apple, but nowhere near the volume that PC has.

We're paying 3 to 4 times more than PC buyers? Okay, look at Sony, their notebooks are running for just as much if not higher. The cheapest Mac model is $999. You can get a Dell for $699, but the capabilities of the Dell aren't even close.

In the end it's your decision.

well half the people in this thread think that typical PC OEMs are a ripoff. most of us, myself included are comparing going with one of Apple's systems vs. going the DIY route and price/performance/quality wise DIY wins(I can do a system for $400 that smokes that $1000 mac mini and admittedly it's not as small it's not as sleek and I'd be running some sort of linux as opposed to OSX but money talks). Apple has a OS that is very user oriented and for many people it's a great blessing. others, myself included don't like the margins apple has. Macs use the same hardware as every other PC and I just don't value software at all. software si replicatable data, it's not physical and to me it holds no financial value. And, as some others have said, the richer you are, the less expensive macs seem. If money is no object feel free to get anything and everything

as you said however, in the end it is HIS decision.

damn some very interesting points here..
Im not saying that im rich or anything though(I wish) but I just think that i want to take the plunge. I have bene using PC's forever now so why not a mac.
My pc can run the newest games fine..and a laptop isnt really meant to play games...thats what i think

but really thanks for everybodys point of view..still thinking about it :P

ohh you were considering a laptop? student discounts on them are reasonably good. they're still more expensive than comparable PC laptops but not that much more. Heck to some extent I'm even considering a macbook, though I'd probably get an Asus EEE or a cheap PC and slap on linux first but hey, laptop wise they're solid units, well rounded as far as build quality goes. Not dramatically better built than most other laptops but still reasonably well made.
