I have a copy of Vista but haven't installed it yet because I was told that it eats your resources like crazy. Anyone use Vista and can tell me a bit of what you think about it also does anyone know, does it wipe out your comp when you install it?
How do you mean wipe out your comp? As for resources, it is resource heavy. If you have 2Gb of RAM or higher it won't make much difference, though you could note slowdown in some games. If you're running XP fine then personally I wouldn't upgrade to Vista; if you're buying a new machine though I would just get it. Basically all it is is XP with some nice shiney interfaces and better security features, but frankly if you're web smart and have a good anti-virus/spyware blocker/firewall combo you don't need the increased security. Plus Vista is an absolute whore to get off a computer once installed so only go that route if you want to stick it out. Some people dislike Vista, personally I think its a solid OS that just has some niggling issues that people blew out of proportion because M$ got their hopes up to much about the Ultimate OS EVER! laff.
I meant your hard drive. my friend said something about when he installed it he had to reinstall all his programs and everything and thx for the info. I had originally bought it for my dad, but the comp was too old to take it, and then the motherboard went out on it and we got a new laptop with it on it..so I was thinking of putting it on my computer. So I figured I might as well use it if it's opened and I can't return it
Makes sense to me, though don't forget opened or closed ebay will take it lol And yes, after installing any new OS you will have to completely reinstall all programs. Tbh I would imagine you would need to re-install all data as well (documents, music and the like) though as these are stored on the HD it could be possible I suppose to create a partition and dump them all there then wipe the rest. Basically, unless I'm misinformed, to install a new OS you'd be best to just wipe the harddrive and start again, otherwise I would imagine complications would arise...
I prefer XP. However, if you have an open copy of Vista, then it can't hurt to use it if your comp can handle it. That being said, is it Home Premium, Business, Premium, or Basic? Cause if it's Basic, you're downgrading from XP.
I dont like vista. Xp works much quicker, and there is no major stuff in vista that isnt in xp. Go xp!
I use XP and im going to install Vista on a second drive. Therefore i can use both Operating systems...
if you have 2 gigs of ram its fine, if below it will work but it will get slow after sometime when you have many programs open.. vista doesnt has too much differences with xp, just some new functies, a ----ty security system, but one kickass skin & it works smoothly with the fade in thingies.. if you have 2 gigs of more i recommened too install it
Installing a new OS depletes your old files. You should back them up if you're going to install. Vista is rather slow depending on how much RAM you have. 3GB should be enough. Vista also has a lot of processes running. The biggest problem with it is the fact that it has the most annoying security ever. Installing a simple program requires your password and authorization. It also blocks certain programs, etc. Personally, I recommend keeping XP and downloading SP3.
Those security settings are very easy to turn off. I have UAC turned off and the flippin warning signs switched off too, so I dont have any of that hassle but do still get the benefit of enhanced web filtering. And there are on programs it would block without giving you the option to unblock anyway.
if youv'e got 2GB RAM or more it'll probably feel faster and more responsive than XP and the extra features are nice. needs some end user tweaking but still not too bad. and i have a dual core CPU and the second core almost is never maxed out, so those additional processes don't affect me in the least
