Main thing you gotta waorry about is keeping everything balanced and have a good navigation. So don't make your text like humongous or anything and keep a clear navigation. You can go for funky styles and shapes but at the same time, keep it easy.
Always make it so that that the most IMPORTANT part of the site is at the top, which means if you have large banner space, let people know a lot about the site through the banner. If you have a very small banner size, make sure under it there is room for info that will let the user know as soon as he or she joins. Also, scrolling is so old. No body wants to have to scroll to find the info they need on the site, if they have to look hard and scroll down 10000 pages, they'll probably leave before they find it.
