PS is and always will be better than gimp. Pros uses PS to edit real life pictures and remove wrinkles on faces and basically redesign it. PS is used for many many other things other than making sigs / lps. You won't see a ----- use GIMP.

topics like this piss me off in a big, big way. <_<

i acknowledge that PS has more commercial features and fits in with industry workflow very well. however, in the realm of web graphics, i do not see any way that PS offers a superior interface or capabilities.

now, i've used both PS and GIMP before. i still have CS2 on my computer. i know both programs, and i know them WELL. and based on my experiences, i made a choice to use GIMP as my primary program.

i've heard several false statements about GIMP's supposed failings in this thread: no gradient maps, beveling is hard, rendering is way too complicated, the interface just sucks, etc. ALL of those are untrue. 99% of the people who complain about GIMP's interface being awkward and confusing never got familiar with it in the first place. and the amount of time it takes to complete a process in GIMP and PS is a function of the experience of the user. if you don't know the program, OF COURSE it's going to take longer.

as for the complaints about GIMP "limiting creativity" and concerns that it can't produce quality work, once more, that's a function of your experience with the program.

the userbase for GIMP is mostly composed of low-skill users. it's also much smaller than the PS userbase. i don't think the program is to blame for that - instead, i blame situations like what happens in this topic: GIMP user A has reached a point beyond the majority of the rest of the userbase, and wants to know where to go next - stick with GIMP, or listen to his friends and pirate PS? of course, this leads to pages upon pages of PS users bashing GIMP. GIMP user A, cowed by the massive peer pressure, abandons GIMP, and the GIMP userbase remains low-skilled. the cycle continues.

i got good using PS CS2, and i once came into thread like this and behaved like you folks, bashing GIMP. then, someone asked me if i'd actually given GIMP a good faith effort. i honestly couldn't say that i had. so, i downloaded it, and was struck by the unfamiliarity of the interface. but i stuck with it, and when i got to the part where most GIMP users reach the limit and switch to PS, i stayed with GIMP. i've pioneered GIMP techniques and styles that have spread around the web. i've helped to raise the overall skill level of GIMP users, and i've discovered that while GIMP is different from PS, for any web graphics, it's more than a match.

i'm not bashing PS users, and i'm not saying one program is superior to the other. i'm just asking people to think before going with the crowd and dragging a great program through the mud.

In my personal opinion photoshop is better

Yes gimp is good, it containts many features similar to that of photoshop
and in many ways is very simple and easy to use

though PS pentool is basically the same as gimps, for some reason i've always liked gimps more
despite how little i used it, i do wish ps had an option in its displacements liek gimps, where it didn't force you to have
    a .psd

though in ways it takes time to learn the programs, you will find some of their respective layouts quite similar

but to really produce alot of stuff to be on par with photoshop, its a bit harder with gimp

PS makes things alot easier, and takes some of the of the effects out of reach in gimp, straight to your desktop

for the price though i don't find there to be enough of a difference

    kinda a crappy 2cents

    but none the less

Gimp is a very good program for being freeware unlike PS which costs a few hundred dollars so it should be a better program and it is. Most people here at GR dont even use the full capabilities of PS anyway except to make sigs/LP which GIMP can do, anything beyond making sigs/lps PS would be the better choice if plan to make gfx a career.

I think it would be a major achievement for GIMP to be called 'better' than Photoshop, lol. Photoshop costs money. Gimp doesn't. If we're counting the price:functionality ratio Gimp would obviously be a better choice - but who is? Photoshop will always be a better choice than any free program; Gimp is called better because when it comes down to it, it's just personal preference. If you use Photoshop, you wouldn't say Gimp was better :P

Photoshop is offcourse better if you want to make very nice stuff. But I think GIMP could be nice for beginners, because it is free and then they can see if they like making graphics.

Photoshop is more advanced in my opinion as they offer more options and convenience. It's the dominating software for designers.

Wow, is this topic still going? I feel like a lot of people here are talking out their asses. GR is composed mostly of PS users, and I just can't feel like some of you guys are just jumping on the bandwagon of "Gimp sux, PS rules." When the only main difference between the two is one is more commercial than the other. I'm pretty sure most of these people who say Gimp isn't a great program probably have not even used it themselves. You have to also realize that some GFXers do not have the money to pay for PS. And that is one aspect that can put Gimp above PS. Many Gimpers produce great work without having to pay hundreds of dollars for a few extra "cool" features.

I do admit that GIMP can make decent digital artwork, but honestly when I used it it seem to require a lot of knowledge of the program to make something that someone new to PS could make in half the time or less. Also it seems you have to create a lot of your settings in gimp to create something PS can do "right out of the box" so to speak, which makes PS more user friendly then GIMP IMO(I don't know for sure but when I used it brushing came out really "framey" as apposed to PS where it comes out seamless and smooth without messing with the settings).

I don't know but to me photoshop just seams like the better choice as far as it's capabilities and learning curve(notice I didn't include "as far as the price goes" because I know not everyone can afford or is willing to pay that much for a photo editing software).I will say one more thing and that is if your just going to use PS for regular old photo editing(which is really what it was mostly designed for...) do NOT buy PS, just get something like GIMP.
