I just think it's interesting that you have a flag in your sig that represents a 150+ year old separatist movement. That flag was designed under the ideas that: 1) The North gives the Southern subsistence farmers the shaft with the high tariffs. 2) Slavery is the natural order of things. 3) The Northern government is liberal and amoral. 4) Lincoln is a ------ (the main catalyst for the first secessions was Lincoln's election). I just think it's a bit... archaic. I think I'm being reasonable in thinking that. Obviously, it is now the "flag of the South", but I think before one goes around showing it off, one should think about the principles upon which the movement it represented was established on... Maybe I'm just biased because where I live in Central Jersey, the cool kids at my school think they're from the South and "show their flags off". It annoys me. But really. Nothing against the South. My girlfriend's from TN.
I would have to disagree. It was based mostly on states' rights. They believed that the federal government was too strong and that the great centralization of the government was damaging to the country and the condition of the states. Secession was also allowed, and Lincoln confirmed, but when more started to secede, he got flustered and concerned and decided to prepare for war, putting troops and forts along the secession borders. The South did attack first though. Anyway. I'm not one to support slavery, but I dislike strong centralized government.
You're definitely right, but the flag wasn't finalized until the war had started. Although Lincoln didn't take a definitely anti-South stance, he did bow to the whims of the strong abolitionist movement later into the war (because he couldn't really be thinking about domestics and he did see it as morally wrong). The higher-ups in the Southern states knew that Lincoln objected to slavery morally, so they assumed that emancipation would actually be on his agenda (which it wasn't). But you're definitely right about why the war actually started. When I say "the main catalyst" I mean it in that that was what directly started it. Lincoln was elected and in response, Southern senators stopped showing up.
I see where you're coming from there. You are correct. Bravo. No offense to Northerners, but I rarely meet a Northerner that knows what they're talking about when they discuss the War Between the States. Haha.

I've been an ass since the first day I was on the site. No, they are nice "fellas"(nice showing of your true color, blocked). Apparently out of all of the internet that knows you, there is one fact that hasn't gotten through your thick skull.
