So I'm looking into buying a new guitar because I've been wanting to learn how to play for quite a while. Thing is, I know nothing about guitars so I need some advice on what to buy. So basically what I'd like to know is, should I get an electric or acoustic and is there a specific model? Also is there any other equipment like an amp or something that I need to buy? I don't want to spend a whole lot of money so what would be a good guitar for say $600 or less. Any help at all is greatly appreciated :)

Thanks for the input so far guys. I was looking on the GC website and I found a few things so far. The reviews are all around very good but I also want to get opinions here.

    http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-SGT110V...325-i1172987.gc

Also, I see that there's 3 different types of guitars (electric, acoustic, or acoustic-electric). Is one type better than another and what would be best for a beginner?

hah, get electric, acoustic is good for wasting money, then later buying an electric guitar.
you want to go like NANANANANNA
    not like nanaanan
I'll find you a good one under 600.

I'm looking in buying a Beginner guitar as well, just go to your shop and ask for a Starters Pack. It costs around 200 for the guitar, amp, picks, stand, bag altogether, when u get better buy an advanced guitar. If shops don't do that kind of thing near you i suggest EBAY :)

Electric in my opinion is better but it just depends in what music you like.

I highly suggest you don't get a starter pack.
My first guitar, and my friends first bass were starter packs, they are usually not hand-made, not too good quality, and didn't sound right. The amp was alright though, but everything else ( strings, guitar, picks, tuner) sucked. Strings were messed up, and everytime I hit this one string, it made a bad sound. I had 2 strings like that. As for the picks, they were cheap, and bent too much, so I just made mine out of old gift cards/ credit cards. Oh, and the tuner didn't work, as in the battery kerploded.

I really think you guys should consider my above post, if you have the money.

Thanks very much for the links. And yea I'll definitely look at the RG2EX1. That's a nice, affordable price and looks like something I'd really enjoy playing

    Schecter.

Ive got a schecter thats 4 years old, i bought it for 300 dollars and it still sounds better then any ibanez ive ever heard (ive been playing for 4 years).

If you go to your GC you can find a nice schecter for like 300 dollars, and almost all schecters are made in the USA (Except basses).

I own an acoustic Alvarez and it I love it. It's a black guitar with only one inlay on the 12th fret, with a cool design and look to it. It sounds great too whether it's alone or amped up. I play it at my church plugged in and it sounds great. I think it was like $350-400 and I'd say it's the best acoustic for the price.

Btw, mine is an acoustic-electric if you were wondering. Acoustic electrics are acoustics that have pickups inside of them so you can plug them into an amp.

Dude. Learning on electric is a bad idea. Get a cheap acoustic (but not too cheap). They're wayyy better for beginners. Ask any guitar teacher out there.

I have an Ovation acoustic-electric, but those are kind of pricey.
