well part of voting on anything, is that everyone has a different opinion of which is the best. sometimes it is clear to knock a few of the entries out because its obvious, but the rest is just opinion. some colors will grab your attention and get your vote. so its really tough to do, and i dont think its right to say that the staff voting is wrong. i disagree with some of the votes, but thats why we have voting. people doing all think the same thing, so someone will always disagree with the results.

    Voting on basically 1 factor?

I would like the voters to know about all the factors.

I've seen battles on nsl where there's 2 tags and the other stands out on the first look and gets instantly votes but when I look at the other one it looks better executed, the other looked rushed with a lot of mishaps and people seemed to ignore that on the first look.

Wow, cmon Bandit, enough crap answers man.

The staff voting is complete crap tbh, a few people already recommended having a select group (a new one) that votes. Then its up to YOU guys who is in the group, so just pick fair people that do graphics, and know quite a bit about it...

    Crap? Really?
As little as some people may not want to admit it, part of the SOTW Voting Staff are still wildly active in graphics and producing top quality work. And the recent results have been anything but terrible, people are not going to agree on everything but for example...in the "Game Renders" SOTW, the top 3 entries all deserved to be in the top 3, maybe not in that order but damnit it's about personal taste.

If anything LIKE public voting is going to form, it's going to be a select group of people who have a clue what they're on about, like mentioned.

Why not create some sort of rate system that is less direct that 'voting'. I am sure there is some sort of biased view in the voting anyways, as there almost always is in any competition, and there will continue to be unless you find someone who doesn't give a dog's tail about gamerenders or it's users. 'Signatures', in my opinion, should not be rated on just one thing, their look, either. It should be more spread out, like as mentioned before, a rate system.

    Example:

    Originality: 57/100
    Color Use: 59/100
    Flow: 10/100
    Depth: 58/100

A script would then gauge all votes against each other and choose the one with the most outstanding score. Even if members of the vote team were talking to each other about numbers and ratings, it would be impossible to calculate who would win. You could assign certain priorities to certain subjects too, like originality would be a priority 10 and color use, a priority 6. These priorities would of course be voted on, and tested. In my opinion it would lead to a very fair system, despite biased opinions, of course judges would need some sort of graphics knowledge.... And if there was a biased vote, a person who put 1/100 on all their answers, the script could nullify that, if it was too far out of range of others.

It also appears that most people think that SOME of the staff is incompetent when it comes to graphics. If this is so the staff could just select a few of its more competent members to make the decisions, I am sure they have more influence anyways, subconsciously or not. If I sucked at graphics and saw Broken (for example) vote for someone, or heard he did, I would be inclined to vote for him as well. That's why a private (hidden) and unique rate system would be a benefit. The script would require alot of variables and math though.

If you've looked in the Realism sotw results you would realize what made us make this topic and further argue about it.

It doesn't matter if you are still "wildly" active in graphics or not. What matters is are you "wildly" active in graphics WITHIN our community rather then behind the scenes like I've already stated before. That would atleast give you some experience with ranking tags from the community because you're actively making and looking at tags within it, even when it's not SOTW time.

I don't want public voting. Too much of a hassle and inexperienced people voting, bias, etc. I actually do want "a select group of people who have a clue what they're on about" BUT not like YOU mentioned.

Sorry, art is about catering to the buyer.

You need to convince us to like your art, not simply make it stroking your epeen thinking your art is better than everyone elses and then when you lose go whining in the forum problems / suggestions forum.

Even striking down public voting to only people with >500 posts will nearly always result in someone winning from friends, etc. voting for the individual, and while you may all like the credits from your wannabe e-friends, sorry, it isn't going to happen.

Staff is NOT bias in the least bit, the people whom submit entries need to learn what the art as a WHOLE is doing today, and not what the art at GR is doing today. The art at GR impressives generally nubs whom have no artistic grasp or very beginning knowledge of programs, you can do a couple of layers on a white canvas with random stocks erased and then some coloring layers and a couple of sharpening layers and be rated as professional on GR, but when you go into actual art your worth little more than the dog crap I scraped from my boots this morning.

As Broken said, and I whole heartidly agree, most of the GR populace is all googley eyed regarding trendwhore techniques that everyone can do for minimal effort and maximum outcome. Sorry, but if all you can do is the current trend whore style of art that has tens of tutorials flying around at any given time, and that another 15 people in SotW do, your not going to win, period.

Public voting on GR has ALWAYS failed in the past, and every single graphics site I have ever known it has FAILED drastically. We could use a select group of people, but that would last about 2 weeks before the populace knew whom those individuals were, and start paying them for their votes, start being friends with them so they become bias, etc. (we actually tried this before, and it happened that way). We pondered the idea of switching out the group of people every week based on staff opinions, but again, if its staff opinions of who should vote, their vote is almost guarenteed to be the same as ours.

Again, if you don't like the staffs method of voting, generally based on aesthetics with knowledge of graphics programs, too bad. Stop trend whoring things 15 other people do in the same SotW and expecting to win, and do something creative with your OMFG ARTISTIC GOODNESS!!one!1!!one1!

    Ignored his other point.
Even the, ehm, "Select" group of voters have friends within the community, and they're always going to be biased.

Acutally Broken, they are not always going to be biassed. I voted against Pulse in ROTY and I am friends with him, it's just the other render was better.
