what's a good upgrade for an on-board sound card? I used to have the creative audigy SE but it never worked good on my PC. I'm not really looking for an expensive one though

what system do you have as most onboard chipsets offer BETTER sound performance than cruddy cards and have for the past bit of time.

your onboard is comparable to a $60 graphics card in terms fo sound quality. if you have a reasonably good CPU(onboard uses CPu cycles) you're fine probably and would be better of placing the money towards better spekers.

I see, I'm actually going to buy some new speakers along with the sound card. I just want to get some opinions first regarding sound cards
