Chances are you'll want a higher end desktop, and a mediocre notebook for notes and such.

I just got a new 24" Mac and I love it. Though, in your situation, I would get a laptop. Macs are a pretty solid choice, though if you want to do some gaming, stick with a Windows. It is pretty much your choice and you should research pros/cons and comps that will suit your personal style and life.

depends on what you use it for.

and FYI if you can't afford a $500 laptop and a $1000 desktop you shouldn't be looking at macs as they are priced at a tremendous premium - even after student discounts have been applied

well if you put it that way,
i might just go for a mediocre desktop and laptop
instead of going all out for a laptop.

any good choices for cheap, yet good systems?

basically go witha relatively cheap OEM based laptop but add in your own RAM(it's cheaper) and go the DIY route with your desktop. a system of comparable performance to mine would go for roughly $1000 now.

ummm if you arent going to be really using it, a mac isnt a practical choice for a college student. much to pricey.

This is a good build for a desktop for almost 1000 bucks.
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 ($190)
Motherboard: Motherboard with Intel G33 Chipset. ($90)
RAM: 2GB of atleast 667MHz (No more than $50)
Graphics Card: You don't need one if you don't plan on playing games, but a 8800GTS 320MB if you do plan on gaming. ($200)
    Monitor: 19" Widescreen (Around 160-180)
Case including PSU: Nothing fancy, around 160 for both.
Hard drive: 500GB for about 100 or so dollars.

    Total: $950

The rest you can figure out on your own.

swap the 6750 for an e8400 which is out this time next week
    spend $100 to get an IP35 or DS3l(both $100ish)
f' the 8800GTS320 it's EOL for a reason cheaper better cards exist, like the 3850/70 and 8800GT512
case and PSU should usually be separate purchases, though I'd say around $150ish for both is fairly accurate.
harddrive depends but what you said is generally accurate.
Add in a 3rd party heatsink of some sort(silence is gold/more headroom)
