can someone plz tell me how many kilobytes are in a megabyte and how many megabytes are in a gigabyte how many kilobytes = 1 megabyte how many megabytes = 1 gigabyte (hope i spelled the names right) +rep to anyone who can help me out
1000 now... if your'e referring to Mibi bytes, Gibi bytes and the like, then 1024. unfortuantely most call mibibytes and gibibytes mega and giga.
Ah, yes. this arguement. many a person asks me why, when they plug their brand new 320gig hard drive in, their computer says "OMG!!! YOU NOW HAVE 300GIGS OF SPACEZORZ". "Oh noes, they says. but i thought i bought a 320gig! not a 300GIG!" well now, hard drive manufacturers like to work in gigabytes (=1000megabyteszorz) but Windows likes to work in gibi bytesmajiggers (=1024megmabytezorz) all in all, it doesnt matter.
But wait if that's true (the divide by 1.024 thing), how come my HDD said 360GB but on my computer it says I only have 320GB space to fill up?
Because it isn't the correct way to work it out. If you're working in megabytes, then 360gig is 360 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 If you're working in mibibytes, then 360gig is 360 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 so, if you do the math we get 360,000,000,000 and 386,547,056,640 if we work out 360gig in mega bytes we get 360,000,000,000 and 320gig in mibi bytes we get 343,597,383,680 which is probably what you actually have available.
