My third riddle. This one is the hardest. You have a unlimited amount of ropes and matches. Each rope burns for exactly one hour, but the flame doesnt move at a steady rate along the rope, and it is different for each rope. This means it could take 10 minutes to burn to the middle of the rope, and 50 to burn the other half. You must find a way to get exactly 3/4 of an hour, or 45 minutes. Please explain it clearly so I understand it.
You would take an average of 100 ropes and see where they are at in an aprox section of the rope after 45 mins, and then you take that average to determine an area when you know its in the middle of the averages to get the exact 45 min mark. :edit: its averages and propability, but its random... there wouldn't be a real way to get the exact time that it burns for 45 mins, you would need to know the physical properties of each rope, and basic info from previous burning of ropes to detemine an area along the ropes based on the info to get a aprox time, basically its impossible.
Thats the first step. Now you got 30 minutes. What do you do now? [/b][/quote] As soon as the two opposing flames hit each other, light both ends of the other rope. When this rope gets halfway through, you will have 15 minutes. Add that to the 30 minutes from your first rope, and you get 45.
Okay this is how you do it. Light both ends of one rope, and light one end of a second rope all at the same time. When the first rope goes out, blow out the flame of the second rope, and now you have a rope with 30 minutes on it. Light both ends of a third rope, and when that goes out, light the ends that arent burnt on the rope with 30 minutes. Sorry if this was too hard for you guys.
it was just stupid, but its still not exact, its impossible to get EXACTLY 45 mins like you said, so technically without precise timing, like you said you can't possible land on exactly 45 mins. and remember, you can't do multiple things during the same second, you can't blow out a rope and light one all at the same time.
