I'm going to be honest, for this stuff GR is definitely NOT the place to ask. While the people here are generally helpful and are willing to help, this would escape the scope of knowledge of just about every member here, myself included. If you want to build a large corporate site with a complex custom database, that's fine with me, but I suggest learning all the basics one step at a time as such an undertaking is a lot of work and usually involves teams of specialists.

Zen Cart works fine for me. I am the admin on a small electronics site which uses it. If you're running a small shop then you could try one of the pieces of software here. However, if you're actually going to try and run a larger site (like Target, Wallmart, etc.) then your probably best using your own software, but unfortunately, I can't help you there.

Joomla is not made as a shopping cart system, while through the use of extensions it will make for a well rounded solution. Zen Cart is your best bet for shopping cart systems, as that is what it was made for.
