Ok...If you dont play MMORPGs or have a legit opinion...dont post here with your useless trolling bull----

so I play a lot of guildwars...so this is what got me started...recently a new item was introduced into the game (Eternal Blade)...for a while there was only 1...or 2 floating around. One of which wasnt being sold...the other...came up for sale. If you don't know about guild wars and the marketing system...you wont understand this next part...BUT...the sword was sold for 100k+ 1250e+ vizu+ 200Ambraces....which going at the current Gold prices on certain websites...comes out to about 8200USD...yes 8 ------ing grand. And to add to that...there are 2 other items I know about that have sold privately for more. Back onto the story...The item this man paid 8200bucks for is now worth not very much above average due to a recent game update.

    -----

    Another story...
    ---
A Rogue character in World of Warcraft with arguably the best gear in the game right now has been sold for 7,000 Euro (approximately US $9,700). The avatar had both Legendary swords dropped by raid boss Illidan Stormrage, as well as 4/5 of a Tier 6 armor set.

The original owner, Zeuzo from clan Method on Sylvanas server, has been sighted building up a new Rogue. The buyer, Shaks, currently resides on the Kazzak server but has not had any activity since September 3. His account may have been banned, given the publicity of the auction and Blizzard's policy against selling accounts.

    -----

So what in the world posses these people to spend that much in-game cash...which although against the rules...can be turned into real world cash...on useless pixels?

Heck, if I had enough time I would be building up and selling. But yea, people who spend that much cash on a character or even an item has some major issues. Those are the people who you know, that game is pretty much their whole life. They do not do ANYTHING but that. But to me, even then, it is like wow, you are dumb.

    To each his own.

That's alot of money to spend on just a game, but you cant really tell someone how to use their own moohlah, while it might be stupid to us, they have their reasons.

Which is probably just to be the best, being competetive leads to different things, and if you have the cash well that might be one of the routes, I know i've even though about buying tems on runescape even with the account rules, but I dont know.

Seriously people spend so much money on ---- like this that wouldn't benefit one in any possible way. Instead of spending the money on something good or help some one with money they buy items or characters which could become useless by tomorow if Blizzard wanted to close their servers.

ahaha yes twin blades of azzinoth - history in the making

its just another sign of how video games are playing an increasing larger role in the global economy - people know have the money and are willing to devote so much time and money (oops im kinda redundant :P) to the video game industry/economy

I agree, the amount can be ridiculous. And the person who bought the rogue... the account DID get banned, and it was bull----, but that's Blizzard's policy.

I played Guildwars for a long time. I did mostly PvP, but I knew that the skins you could get from PvE was pretty secksi (which is the only thing people bought items for... they would hardly care about the actual mods, other than 15^50 +30 health and <insert mod here>). I stopped playing Guildwars and went back to WoW (the only two games I've been switching between), so I want to know what change they made so those things drop.

And in all actuality, here's what compells people to buy in-game items. A videogame is a hobby. Plain and simple.

People will by in-game gold/items for the same reason that some people will spend $7,000 for a 50" Plasma Screen HDTV. Because those people have the hobby of watching T.V. and want to enjoy the T.V more, they will spend lots of money on it. The people who play video games will spend money on it, so they can enjoy it more. And I am willing to bet, that the people who spend big bucks on videogames, get more out of it then someone who spends money on that T.V. just because of time.

Obviously the T.V. is an example. The same thing can be said for people who build Model's, or play a sport. If you get enjoyment out of putting together that difficult model that cost $299.99, or spending $300 on a baseball bat and hitting a homerun with it,then I'll have no problem spending my $300 on in game gold that will give me the edge on the battlefield so I can kill more people.

That was the best I can explain it. And trust me... I used to think the same way of "Buying pixels is stupid". But it's a hobby.

To be the best there is, simply that. Same thing could be asked here, why do people pay so much for credits?

In the end everything is useless-ish so if you're gonna get some enjoyment out of it why not?

Are you blind...illiterate....retarded....all of the previous?

    --------

Ummm....no one...My guess is...packet sending...to duplicate mass amount of armbraces, and managed to not get banned by Anet...

What I was stating...is that the amount he spent ingame would of been worth about 8200 real world USD.
