Well... I'm thinking about getting a laptop for Christmas but I don't know which one I should buy. I would mainly use it for internet, some photoshop fun and occasional gaming.

I would like the laptop to be stylish and not too expensive (under 1500 $)

    Thanks in advance

Try an Acer laptop, Idk whether you will have heard of that brand or not, I'm British =P. They have a series of laptops which i cant remember the name of that are pretty good spec wise and appearance too. They're pretty cheap aswell.

Yeah, Acer has some nice/ affordable laptops... I just don't know if they are good (I've heard mixed reviews on their desktops).

I wanted to get a really nice one from MicroCenter during Black Friday... 2GB RAM, Dual-Core 64 Bit Processor, nVidea graphics card, Wireless a/b/g, etc. For about $560.

Also, Toshiba have nice ones for a decent price, and I haven't heard anything bad against them.

I'm not sure about their laptops, but I have a Sony Vaio desktop, and its lasted ~4 years and still going. They are3 a bit pricey for what you get, though.

If anything, I'd steer away from Compaqs and HP's (but not so much as their Compaqs)... Family members have always run into problems with them. (If you didn't see my thread about a laptop problem).

And Dell... You can certainly get better for your money and their tech support sucks.

You could always try a custom build site like ibuypower.

    Get a Dell.

Pick an Inspiron model with whatever screen size you like, and Customize it up til it meets your budgets. You can even choose what colour you want it in.

    I pissed myself.

Back on topic, I suggest checking out http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ or http://www.ibuypower.com/ . Both sites have a very nice bang for their buck ratio there. You could easily get a great laptop for around $1500. I'll post back later with a setup that would fit you.

    Edit:

    Here we go

If you're on a budget, Alienware is a bad move. The only real advantage Alienware has over most other manufacturers is their insanely powerful high end ones. All their lower end models give average performance with an above average price tag.

What I'd recommend doing is waiting until Dell's online shop has some good upgrade deals (i.e. 1gig of RAM upgraded to 2gig for free, or a discount voucher or something) and then configuring one online and having it sent straight to your door.

ya but that could be forever before their store comes up with anything good and even then their computers usually break within 2 years

Dell almost always have a good deal on and I own 2 Dell laptops. One has been going for 6 years, and still runs fine, and the other is 3 years old and I still use it on a daily basis. Please, don't say anything you can't back up with evidence.

    EDIT: Quick check

3 of these models have discounts. You could get a 17" Laptop for considerably under your budget.

OH WOW! 20 FRIENDS! I wouldn't trust a Dell mouse, simply because Dell aren't high end mice developers. But you can certainly buy a Genius or Logitech mice for a tenner. Dell's build quality is excellent, and you will NOT get a decent Alienware for $1500. In case you didn't know, Alienware is owned by Dell.

I have found that HP laptops are clunky and are full of bloatware. I've owned one in the past, and both my Dad and Sister have ones that are less than a few months old, and they immediately required a re-format, so unless you know how to do that, it may be a hassle.

Anyway, Dells XPS range easily competes with Alienware equivilents, and they're much cheaper.

if you had to format then thats your own damn fault cause that shows you got a virus or ------ed up some system file and shows you dont know how to use a computer

Wow, you clearly know little about computers. I reformatted the HP's because there was so much OEM bull---- bloatware installed when I booted it up for the first time, that it was slowing the system down and buggered up the file management.

Reformatting is something I do on a 6 monthly basis anyway, as it keeps the system running fast and clean.

I'm sorry, but I just piss myself almost every time you posted in this thread. Apparently you good sir don't know how to use a computer becuase you would have known that when buying a brand new computer it is far, far, far faster and easier to just format the computer as you would have no information stored on it. Please, before you make a post, realise you do not know everything about computers, and that I'd say 85-90% of the people that lurk in the Technology forum here know much more about computers than you do. And yes, Alienware is owned by Dell, even a Dell XPS is much cheaper than an Alienware computer as you pay for the name more than anything else.

To the thread creator, I still suggest getting a white box system from a reliable online manufacturer.

To Inverse, I also format my computer every 6-7 months :D CCleaner, Ad-Aware, and System Mechanic may speed you up for a little while, but a fresh reformat is the best solution; that is if you remember to back up your files. That is the #1 reason why I suggest that anyone who uses a computer have an external hard drive.
