Well i'm posting here for advice.

    Here's the story...

There's a website that was run, and in the last few months the owner started saying i need people to donate as ive lost my job blah blah blah
and now the site is completely down

So i was wondering can i somehow own that same domain? by contacting godaddy?

I've tried emailing the owner but his email was using the websites domain so i guess that is down aswell?

    Any help greatly appreciated :)

    Daniel

well when you buy a domain that domain stays with the owner for usually 1year or so or until the lease expires .. whats the domain name - i believe you can check when the domain expires :)

or you can ask the person to sell it through a domain market but you cant own the same domain and i doubt godaddy would let you do that without permission of the buyer

Well even though he hasnt been paying the hosting
and his servers have been suspended

will it be more than likely the lease will expire sooner?

No, they don't expire for a while. This is why I always buy my own domains and use them with others' servers. I hate giving others control of my domains because of things like this. What you should do is contact the guy and if you had to pay extra for your plan to get the domain, you should be able to get him to transfer it to you, but it will cost you an extra $10 or so through godaddy

to tell the truth, if he had control of the domain, you might not be able to get it back
