I'd say it's more akin to comparing the PS1 to the N64. PS1 had all these great 3rd party apps and support, the N64 had a somewhat better base in terms of it's actual material composition. Gimp isn't LEAGUES behind like the example you gave. i still get what you mean though. Gimp is free... the SNES is close enough to free. Especially since a lot of people just... wait not allowed to say that...
I don't think GR needs more Gimp users, but I think GR definitely would love to get a larger community. I prefer Photoshop to it though, however it is a really nice alternative.
Photoshop in my opinion is way more powerful that GIMP, mainly because its paid software. So, I don't know why we'd need more GIMP users, but if you can still make quality tags/stuff with GIMP, hey go for it. It'll be nice to see both.
personally i dont care much for gimp. if you use gimp, good for you. if you use photoshop good for you. but photoshop IS better and if people want to use gimp and be a gimp user, it doesnt matter.
Differences such as the 360 being obviously 100x better, hey kinda like photoshop being better then gimp .
Ok this thread has just turned into a bash the Gimp thread... First of all GR does not need more Gimp users, however if there are Gimp users out there we welcome you Second the Gimp is an incredibly powerful program, to say Photoshop is more powerful proves that you know nothing of the program and its workings. The Gimps attractiveness is fully reliant on this power, compared to Photoshop where it has become the mainstream design program due to its easy UI and long time commercial life. Gimp has many scripting features that allow it to act as more of a framework where the gfx engine can be used by other applications. It has been extensively used in server side processing and web based applications I could go on but im tired.... Boils down to the fact u have to be a lot more --- to use Gimp and it broadens your horizons considerably AND its free. But Photoshop has a polished interface that makes creativity a lot easier to express.... Its all about choice, no one should discriminate
