Okay for me I never knew much about photoshop and tuts have helped me alot.I still use them and they are great way of learning, however like even thoughi learn from a tut i never go and make my own tut.I always tend to follow a tut no matter what, say if i have a stock like i get confused what i should do.I dont know im all for tuts I think they are great as I said. I just feel it dont really let me be creative but that maybe just me.

    well, not really.

they do teach you how to put together a tag, and well, the basics.

once you got that down, continuing to use tuts because you're too damned lazy/stupid/drunk/high/not drunk/not high to compose a atag yourself will kill your creativity.

classing MURDERS creativity. at any level. any time. having to justify the quality of your work solely on what others think of it is well, pathetic.

I agree with Entropy.. Using a tut helps users to learn the basics and improve their skills at things - but using a tut for more than just learning kills the originality and the creativity as you have said.

    - If used correctly they inspire creativity with a taught touch of someone elses techniques.

    - If used incorrectly (copying the tut.) then they are a waste of time to the individual and do them no good what-so-ever.

Tutorials teach technique or new ways of doing something, not induce creativity. Thus, it is hard to say that they give or take away from an individual's creativity in any sense. ;)

That's the simplest way to state it. =)

No. For n00bs like me, they are just starting places. Than you use those techniques you learned, and use them in your own way.

i think that the most creativity killing thing on any forums are the people that are harsh and try to mould your signature style into something that they feel is right and make you think that its the only correct way to make one. like i have gotten comments that my colours are a little over the top, but i think that if you look at it with an abstract viewpoint, it helps bring everything together by bringing out certain things and hiding others and all sorts of interesting things people dont see. but thats just me and im sure that others have different opinions on it as well.

as people above said, copying a tutorial and not even thinking about what did what throughout it, is uselessly stupid. but if you can piece together effects and uses during the tutorial, you can make something amazing.

no, they don't kill your creativity, and neither does classing, classing gives you a goal to achieve (------ or whatever) and to make something good enough to be classed that high requires a creative sig

Well, I don't think tut kill creativity, they only help the user learn how to use the program. That is the whole point.

This should be in Graphics Discussion.

I think they help creativity, not hinder it.

It gives you a great start in learning Photoshop. As for stifling creativity, it really depends on whether the individual is willing to think out of the box than just following the instructions on the tutorial.
