I am trying too build a decent system i think i pretty much got it set but iam not 100% sure that the ram is a good choice. Or the sound card, the only reason i didnt put the Creative X-fi on threre because ive heard so many things about crackaling noises when playing games. And if you know anywhere to get a cheaper deal please let me know.

Switch that 8800GTS with an 8800GT.
Also, I dunno whether the Raptors are worth the money, if it means having only 300gig of space. The performance difference between Raptors and your standard Seagate or WD drive is not all that much anymore.

    personally,
I'd drop down to the IP35 ---(the cheepo version) take four 320GB drives and set them into RAID1+0 and get a decent RAID card.

fans, depends. case fans should stress high CFM and not static pressure. Fans for heatsinks and radiators should stress static pressure somewhat more and not CFM so much.
    take a look

I'd say Sflexes for case fans and the Silverstoen FN121 for the CPU HSF.

also ditch zalman, the king of cooling is thermalright

I'm willing to bet that without a fan the Ultra-120 would run cooler than the 9700 and with one... well you get the idea

better/cheaper than the G. Skill. Uses miron D9 ICs in it(the 'best' type of microchips for DDr2) and well ti's cheaper. If you insist on G. Skill, G. Skill Hz(the black stuff) is the best stuff to consider. it's just it costs.

also another thing to ask, is the e6850 a better option for you than the q6600? at stock if you're doing threaded things, the 6600 will pull ahead. In gaming, the 6850 is undoubtedly the king... BUT both are overclockable if that's your thing and well.. is the 2% advantage of the 6850 in clocking worth the lack of cores. Or is the crazy possibility of getting an e6550 or 6750 an option? Those will definitely clock well and the Abit IP35 can definitely take them both to around 3.5-4Ghz depending. Sure the warranty on the CPU mihgt be invalidated, but they cost half as much, will get you better performance and the difference in money can buy you a brand new CPU later on like the 45nm penryn-based procs

Drop the network card and do the rest what xelink said. I'd still lose the raid controller as they're pricy.

Wow. You know I am a bit surprised that with all of the Hi-tech gear you've bought, you only settle for a 300 GB HDD. I wish I could afford a system like yours, but what do you plan to do for your monitor?

No Way.... definitely stick with the raptors.

He's obviously building a gaming machine and if I were him I would put those raptors in raid 0. The read/write performance is going to be insane and very noticeable.
Drop the NIC card it will be a waste.

Everything is not exactly how I would do it but would work none the less.

the idea was to spend $80 less on the motherboard by getting the vanilla version(w/o raid support) and to then spend the difference on a card.

as DS said, drop the Ethernet card, onboard is within 1% of it's performance. I'd have said it myself but I assumed it was a wireless adapter.
I'll check for a decent raid controller yes they're arroudn $100, but a good raid array of several drives will outperform a raid array of two raptors.

well I'll admit when i had my raptor is was nice. Then again i'd say my baracuda is in the same league as far as performance goes.

but I'm fairly certain that two raptors are generally outdone by FOUR highend 7200RPM drives. infact every review I've sen of raptor vs. other drive has typically shown that the difference is within 1-5%. RAID 1+0 or RAID 5 are the way to go. woudl beat the hell out of it as far as read/write performance goes. Now, seek times, that's a different story but ehh.

IMO, screw the 830 and get a silverstone tj-07 w/ a custom watercooling kit [swiftech triple rad, dtek fuzion, laing d5 pump, yate loon med fans, 1/2 tubing] place the rad in the bottom area in the tj 07. Also get the DFI P35 DK which overclocks like mad with a E6850 and some good cooling. If you just want to go with air cooling go with the tj-09 also get a 8800 gt instead of the gts. If your planning to get this early 08 just wait and get the Q9450 which should be around 310$.

    Code:
The Raptor-X's performance is even good enough to beat a RAID 0 array consisting of two modern 7,200 RPM drives, except in terms of pure throughput, of course. In addition, it is nicer having only one drive to install, and the data safety of a single drive is better anyway. Speaking of safety, we should refer to the five year warranty, which should give you a good feeling.

So is the Raptor-X the perfect show stopper for the competition? Yes, it is, but not only because it's better than its rivals in the enthusiast market space. Generally we would always recommend the fastest drive available as a system drive
    -Toms Hadware

For everyday computing and gaming a raptor is better. But for a file serving computer RAID is better. Based on the setup for his computer I would assume hes gaming hence the raptors are a better choice.

It may be faster, but I was merely saying I don't think the extra speeds is worth trading in all the extra space you get with 320gig drives. For the same price he could get 4 320gig drives, = ~900gig of space compared to 300 with the Raptors. Also, could you please link me that review. Depending on how old it is, may have some bearing on its accuracy. Consumer drives have come a long way in the last little while, and with an aging SATA interface, their edge is dropping.

Also, I used to own 2 74gig Raptors in RAID0, and I sold them and bough a few 320gig drives, because the first thing you'll notice with the Raptor drives running is the NOISE.

Here is a review where they compared a raptor, 2 raptors in raid 0, 1 7200 HD and 2 7200 HD in raid 0. Done in march of this year.

The Raptor raid 0 won hands down. But the raptor by itself also beat the 7200 raid 0 in IO performance and seek times.

I think this decision is really dependent on the computers use. If I were building a gaming machine I would put Raptor drives in it. If I were building a Media Center PC, or File Server I would use Raid.

Thanks everyone for your input it was very helpful. I choose to change my cpu fan and RAM by xlink's suggestion. and thanks for those benchmarks I think I will keep the the Raptors and place them in Raid 0 but Iam not completly sure yet. I will let you guys know what I decided to do next week when i order the comuter.

    Thanks,
    King killa
