Ok well here is my problem....

I play a game called Everquest 2, and it's worked fine up until about two weeks ago, when I started getting an error message that tells me i'm Out of Memory and it then continues to close out of my game. Although I don't worry about it though because I only have 1gig of memory, so I up my virtual memory a bit and it works fine for about a week, until recently it doesn't give me any warning and it seems like it puts the computer to sleep (my screen goes into standby but the computer looks like it is still running) and I can't get my computer out of it and I always end up having to cut power to my computer in order to turn it off. I was just wondering what Might be causing it and if there is any way to fix it?

If you need any other details just ask for them.

Have you tried updating your graphics drivers?
You can always try a lower version of Direct X. (That helped me with my Half-Life 2 problem).
Does this happen with other games? Because if it doesn't; it could just be the game. Maybe a clean re-install of the game?

1 GB of RAM should be plenty for Everquest. You can try something like FreeRAM XP Professssssional (use the short version of professssional) and try freeing up some RAM with that.

Side note... Why is the short hand version AND the actual spelling of "professsssssional" restricted words? o_O

i dont know how to help with your problem but words like pr0fessional have been blocked because people would say --- sig for sale to up the price on it.

hate having to use numbers to make the word

    sounds like a software issue.

how much RAM are you using on startup. with a lot of ---- on my system starting up automatically I'm 'only' using around 200-400mb. Should be around 120-200 for a typical startup

    start>>run>'msconfig'

I've tried this but it still happens,
and I realized I didn't mention this but it doesn't just instantly go to standby when I open the game, It takes about a minute after i'm able to load it and then it will kick me out. And just today my computer has started freezing (not going to sleep, Freezing) when i'm not doing anything, It's just on the desktop and I can't even turn it off without cutting the power so :P

    help pls

You run a spyware program or two and a virus scan (at different times, naturally)?

My brother had somewhat of a similar problem... I think if you just try maybe a reformat? =/

I forget what fixed his computer.

Like I thought earlier, I definately think its a RAM issue. O doubt this is the case, because you wouldn't get past startup... But, do you have two different types of RAM (say PC2700 and a PC3200 stick) in your computer?

Have you tried rolling back to a previous date (when it was not freezing)?
The computer itself for some reason might not be receiving enough power?
Does the computer have sufficient room too allow it to cool itself? Because it might be overheating.

yup I have good spyware adware and virus stuff according to pcworld/consumer reports and all those places :P
and i'm almost positive my ram is all the same :P

ok i'll try the drivers and stuff, but if i do reinstall windows, does that require me to also reinstall any programs I already have because that is the biggest hassle with doing that, and i've already had to do that 2-3 times in the past, (if there was a way around deleting all my stuff i'd be all for it ;) )

If you do a reformat, you'll have to re-install windows... And think thats the only option you have if you don't have a rollback date.

Just thought of something, even though I'm sure its not the case; does your motherboard support the 1 gig?

well everything has always worked fine, i've had this computer for 4years and not had problems, but is it possible that the RAM just went bad? or is that unlikely

haha... Thats always a possibility, you could always try a different set of RAM sticks. (Make sure they're compatible with your computer first ;P)

ok well I've tried most everything you guys recommended and nothing has worked, but my dad does want me swapping out the memory sticks of my other comp to this one to see if the memory went dead or not...
so is there another way to tell if it's gone bad?

your problem sounds like something that happend to my computer recently. whenever i did anything that required any large amount of cpu power, my computer would just crash. after trying to find some kind of software problem or something with no luck, i looked inside my computer, and found that between my cpu's heatsink and fan was a large layer of dust, which was making it overheat, and crash. as soon as i cleaned it out though, it ran like it was a year old again :]

i dunno if this will help at all, but its worth a try.

If your pc freezes it's most likely a heat problem. Try to remove the dust on your CPU and graphics card, Also the standby thingy sounds like a driver problem with your graphics card.
