First i know i typed duel intentionally and it should be dual but that aside. im having a problem with ubuntu and windows xp it seems that when i installed ubuntu it deleted my xp boot file now i cant boot up without the ubuntu hd in when i did a little searching i found that you can use your windows xp disk repair to fix the problem but ive searched and i cant find any of my 3 copys so im out of luck there without illegally downloading (not sure if it would be but rather not take the chance without knowing a head of time) so im hoping someone knows a way to fix it i did try using the restore on xp and didnt work.
You are using Grub Bootloader correct? If so, boot it up a couple times, and if it doesn't auto-add the XP to the first then go into the Grub settings on Linux and add the sector of the XP manually. Don't switch back to Window's for dual booting Linux. Grub right? Then we will go from there. EDIT: Okay, so I read your topic more and more and was like WAIT, WHAT? So now I am completely lost lol. Do you have this unbuntu installed on the same disk or not? Because you are saying dual boot like you are, yet you say you can't boot it without the Unbuntu disk in . . . HUH? Explain further, and again, Grub?
some how the loaded deleted the file that allowed windows to boot up by its self i have 2 hard drives one has xp the other is ubuntu. i just got a 300 gig that i want to put in but i cant because i cant boot up xp without the other
Oh, in that case, just use Grub to boot your XP too. Should be a free download: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ I use Grub anyways. Can't stand that, what is it? erm . . . BOOT.ini? LOL
No, you aren't understanding either. The thing is this: Even when I am installing windows I go back and I install the Grub boot loader, even if there aren't any other OS's on the comp. I do this because Boot.ini tends to get hit a lot with viruses and ---- like that. It just isn't a pretty sight. So that is the boot loader I use. If you don't really want to do that, then there is another way, of course: Simply stick the XP disk into the system, go to Recovery mode, enter the password for admin, and then use: fdisk /mbr Note: Make sure you know what drive letter is CD then change the directory to the rom drive before entering that code (if it is not on that drive already, of course). Example may look like this: F://fdisk /mbr
can the grub loader be downloaded on my xp hd so i can get rid of the unbuntu one also can it be made so i dont have to pick it from the list?
Yeah, but since you sound a little bit more unexperienced, I would just go with the second option I gave you. I am sorry to leave like this, but I am going to go to bed mate. Just stick in the XP disk and follow those little steps, that should get you through it if that's your issue.
im good with comps but ive never came across this my x teacher who has been doing it for over 10 years in field then the rest teaching never heard of it either. *edit* also i said before i lack the disk because i lost them the 3 comps i got from gateway all had xp cant find a single one.
grub is just a bootloader. there are tens of bootloaders out there. I use grub and like it was well, though at the end of the day i really don't care, I'm just using it because vista's bootloader is garbage and XP's doesn't play friendly with non M$ OSes.
Check, and it's free, simple, and you can always find support for it. Good morning, now off to school.
