swap the GFX to an x1950pr or 7900GS if possible

consider the 2GB ki of crucial ballistix for $60 after rebate

I'd try to get the dfi blood iron p35 and get a q9300 cpu when they come out in january for around the same price as the q6600.

on the same note, isn't the 8600GT this years low bang/$$$ card?x1950pro and the 7900GS btoh have mroe advanced 256bit memory buses and are fairly close to their top of the line counterparts in the generation they came out. The 8600s have cheap 128bit buses memory and are drastically cut down versions of the 8800s. an 8800GTX has 128shader processors, an 8600 has 32.
    http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_200...5&chart=318

not the most accurate fo charts, but EVERY single review I've ever sen mirrors it. In almost ever scenario the 7900GS beats the 8600. the 7900s also have more overclocking headroom. I'd say the x1950pro is still the better buy if prices are close since IQ is a bit better and overall performance is a bit better, especially in the more demanding situations.

basically the 8600s are really cheap parts and aren't realy worth it when there are last gen cards that perform better for less $. nVidia and ATi are pricing their old cards VERY aggressively because they need to dump stock before they can ramp up production on newer and better cards. Realistically, this years cards should nto have been 8400,8500,8600, they should have been 8100 8200 and 8300.

as for the RAM, lower price & overclocks better. With RAM there are two primary things to consider. First and foremost are the chips sued on the RAM, the ICs, the integrated circuits. Right now the best ICs are made by micron and are called micron d9(based off of the binning number placed on them, EG: I have D9GCT chips on my RAM) All the highend DDR2 RAM is based off of D9. You can get a d9 chip rated at DDR2-533 and it'll do DDR2-1200 almost guaranteed(and I have a kit of RAM like that to prove it too). A year ago or so micron d9 was relatively cheap for memory companies to buy. Since then other products became cheaper. Corsair has switched to the lesser promos chip for a lot of their mid range and mid-high range stuff and Crucial still uses micron d9(on their mainstreme modules their lowend stuff uses crap though), in part because they are a subdivision of micron. Then within each line of ICs some do better than others on an individual basis, companies sort them(called binning) and then resell them as part of a kit with the better ICs/modules being sold for more and the lesser ones being sold for less.

the second thing to consider is the PCB board on the RAM. To be blunt I don't follow it too much. It matters, but not to a degree to be obsessed about.

Don't get the Raptor drive. The performance difference between them and your standard consumer drives is much smaller than the price difference. Instead, take the money, and get a 7900GS or 1950pro or an 8800GTS 320mb. Sooooo many people buying that 8600 and regretting it. nVidia are marketing sharks.
