ok so my case is the standard from the store one and ive been saving up for a 8800, well long story short, the pci-e slot is the top slot so i cant use the 2 slots shown on the card, so what i need to know is, is it possible to use the 8800 without the slot above the main card or will it blow my house up?
I don't really understand you and you draw a pic? is it like this? ___ |CPU| ---PCI-e--- ----- ----- |----CARD------| |----CARD------| if so then that's OK just performance is SLIGHTLY lower
You can, but you'll need a waterblock that takes up one space and a mod to change the backplate to a singleslot.
do you mean like this standard diagram shown in illustration --- ||||||CARD|||||| ||||||CARD|||||| --- ---PCI-e--- ------ ------ your setup ||||||CARD|||||| ||||||CARD|||||| --- ------ ------ if so then your fine
ok |--------REST OF CASE----------| |----PCI-E SLOT------------------| |----FREE SLOT-------------------| |----FREE SLOT-------------------| |----TV CARD----------------------| |----FREE SLOT-------------------| |------BOTTOM OF CASE--------| hmm what im not quite sure of though, is that my current card has the fan facing downwards, but on the 8800s requirements it needs a slot above the card, does this mean my case is dodgy and it actually needs the slot under it and the card being upside down?
I think it just means that you need to have the area around the fan to be atleast somewhat clear. there is no real need for there to be a free slot directly above the card. I've never heard of anything like that. FYI only BTX and modified ATX cases(like mine) have the fan facing upward. in most other situations, as in 95% of the time, the fan on video cards does in fact face downward. I think what they're getting at is if you're using a BTX case it's ideal to have a free slot directly above the fan. so assuming your case can actually fit the sucker in and that your PSU is up to it you should be good to go.
ahh sweet, thanks mr 'link, reppings to you :wub: btw, what i ment was the card need the bay for the main board and one for cooling purposes, but i think my case should be fine
