    Back story:

Jena, Louisiana, deep Southern town. Racial problems -- white kids beating up black kids, black kids beating up white kids. A few days before the attack, some idiot hung a few nooses in front of a 'black' area (the town is essentially segregated, though by its own residents, not by law). Six black teens saw this as justification to attack a lone white kid, who was subsequently beaten and knocked out, though they (the six) continued to attack him after that. The DA decided to charge the kids with attempted murder.

Now, you've got the NAACP, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson down there protesting. They believe the charges (attempted murder) are racially motivated (harsher because they are black), the fact that four of the six (ages 17 and 18) are being charged as adults is racist, the attack is basically justified (because of the racially-motivated violence in the past), and the kids are generally being turned into some brand-new 2007 Rosa Parks.

    Thoughts?

My question is this: why aren't Al Sharpton and the gang screaming 'hate crime?' The attack was about as racially motivated as it gets, except for the fact that the attackers are black and the victim is white. What would be the reaction were the tables reversed? Hang 'em high? Same thing?

Al Sharpton has no time to think about reverse racism. >.>

Anyway, It looks like there are other incidents where whites beat up blacks were punished with assault charges.

But we can't deny the crime still exists.

I think the charges need to go down a level and it should be fair.

Well, I suppose it would depend on how bad the beating were, it might not be racist, plus 6 on 1 just wasnt fair..

In all the fights I have EVER seen, in my entire life, or even heard about... I have NEVER seen or heard about a 5v1 where someone gets knocked out.... in fights... people USUALLY don't get knocked out... It's difficult to knock someone out, whether you think it is or not. That being said.... they managed to knock him out, then continued beating him. This IS attempted murder, whether you see it or not. I would say it was if the tables were turned, it's attempted murder in anyone's eyes.

Jesse Jackson is a racist himself. Of course he tries to say that the charges are racial, and not fair.

I've heard it all over the place as to the results of the fight, from him being out cold to him being able to walk away and go to some social function later that night. Most of the people I've heard talking, however, have said that he was out -- slammed his head against the curb a few times, etc. etc. etc. I've also heard that this person was supposedly one of those who hung nooses from a tree (though blacks were lynched for quite a while, there have been millions of others that have been hung as well -- blacks, whites, Asians, Native Americans... -- I don't see how a noose is a racist symbol regarding blacks), and that this was the reason that the individual was attacked (weeks later?). That being said, the above is just what I've heard from newspaper articles, editorials, the radio, and others talking -- I don't pretend to know exactly how the situation went down. However, six guys on one, and it kept going when he was down? Doesn't really sound right.

A few have had their charges dropped from attempted second degree murder to assault/battery.

One the guy was an idiot who was provoking another ethnic group into disliking him all over a tree that a black group wanted to sit under. yeah it's Louisiana and they're still racist (at least some) they need to get over it. However, the blacks that beat the white guy down (no matter how much he deserved it) shouldn't have happened.

It's ludacris to think that, that is fair game for betting someone down 5 on 1. Besides the charges might have been weakened if it was one on one. Just get the minor to kick the heck out of him and no one get hurts but the one that deserves it.

So really, the white guys were being racist and they knew it. The black guys went over board all in all everyone was wrong. Attempted murder charge shouldn't stick due to him being released so quickly (and not being dead). Really 5 guys taking on one guy, if they wanted to kill him he'd be dead.

I think that the only thing people should be looking at is 6 kids beat up 1 kid until he/she passed out, and then continues to hit him. The fact that he was is front of this house and that house had a noose in it is irrelevant. Maybe he's from Washington state visiting grandma on the way to her house from a grocery store? The fact that the attackers are black and the kid that got the skittles beat out of him is white doesn't matter.

Just a quick note, " Attempted murder charge shouldn't stick due to him being released so quickly (and not being dead)." The whole point of it being attempted murder and not murder is the fact that he's NOT dead :P.

You seem to only have the end of the story here. The white kid that got beat up by the 5 or 6 guys actually brought a shotgun to school a day or two before it. If someone pointed a shotgun at me, I would probably try to make sure he wouldnt do that again and thats exactly what these people did.
The boy that brought the gun to school did not even face any charges.

The whole thing is stupid and our government isnt handling it well at all.

Reverse racism? Blacks beating up whites just because they're white is racisme.. nothing reverse about it.

A lot of people seem to forget that Black/Asian people can be racist too.

The noose thing isn't overly irrelevant it's aggravated, you can't go to the bronks and hold up a confederate flag holding a noose with a beer in your hand and wave it in front of 6 black guys due to the symbol that you're portraying, besides someone holds a shotgun to me one day and not the next they are dead that day. Also, attempted murder doesn't mean the person is dead, just means they wanted to and something happened that enabled them not to kill him weather it'd be police or guilty conscience

If he pulled a shotgun out of his pants at school, somebody should have been informed. That dumbass should have been sitting in a state prison for the next three years (if he hadn't shot himself in the process, a la Eric Harris and friends). Let me guess, though, the administrators were informed and they didn't do anything since he was white? Bulls**t. What kind of school is going to let a kid get away with bringing a shotgun? I had metal detectors at my school (though I could easily get a knife in), and they had cops on campus every hour of every day.

Even then, unless these guys had taken the kid down in that moment, they had no legal right to do what they did.

I see racism being portrayed as one sided, therefore a reverse is termed even if it doesn't exist by your definitions. Its a evening news thing.

So if both parties are at fault how do you determine and execute the punishment?

both fairly by their peers by the different judges. If you were breaking into someones house got out of the house with a T.V. and got mugged for your wallet 'cause you broke the t.v. while being mugged it doesn't excuse breaking and entering you should still be tried for that as well
