I'm going to have to assume you're trying to connect to your college internet.

Since you're in college shouldn't you use Ethernet instead of going wireless?? Having a desktop computer is not the most portable thing to carry about.

I think any wireless card should work. And since the wireless is "excellent", I'm guessing your getting a signal?(preexisting card?)
How does a card require a router? I'm unfamiliar with this.
Finally, college internet is normally secure in the fact that there's at least a password protection, are you sure you followed their directions to connect properly?

Also: To find out your computer specs

    Go to
    Start---> Run Type " dxdiag " ---->Enter/Ok
It'll bring up a directx diagnostic that'll tell you about ur motherboard, BIOS, and whatnot. Display tab for Video Cards.

    are you living on campus?

if you're trying to leach signal from 2 miles off you're not going to get anything.

Actually if you are 2 miles away perhaps you should look into getting the largest regulation sized satellite receiver. It picks up a signal from 10 miles if i heard right.

    I think your confused.

Consider your laptop. It has a wireless card in it and its picking up your college internet.Therefor, your college is providing the "router" already. For without a transmitter, how is the internet being transmitted by the college at all?

Just in case, a router can also provide wireless service.

I looked at bestbuy and i found this one:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1157068455017

It operates more or less under the same (802.11 a/b/g/n) standard that Enter Germany's and your laptop's wireless card operates. There isn't an obscure card that operates differently that i have encountered.

Also, the ability to pick up a signal depends on your location. Like a Tv, your wireless cards look for any signal that comes across it, and since your laptop picks up a signal, your room or whatever is likely to be well withing your college's transmitting range.

I hope this clarifies everything. I can't really understand your situation but I can try anyway.

I loled at that, My computer doesn't even cost $900 -.-

As for the card, I suggest a netgear, they are very good, I'm not positive what model it is because its in my dads computer not mine.

I hav a laptop with built in wireless card and the netgear gets a signal about twice as far as my laptop does.
