Because they lose quality. This is why I don't do it. And PNG is always a large file

i save them as GIF, not PNG, and they are still fine, if the image has a colour BG, you have to render it again to get rid of the colour BG

No you don't. Magic wand the background and press delete. CTRL+right click the layer in the layer pallet window go to select > modify > contract. Make it one pixel. All should be fine ;)

EDIT: Also, they might look fine, but gifs are never fine. They do lose alot of quality. Going from 16 million colors to 256 colors is a big difference.

but if some parts of the render are almost the same color as the bg the magic wand picks up part of the renderand when you press delete it dont look right with a bit ripped out of it

Thats why people try to change the background colour of the render depending on what colours are contained in the render.

The background eraser is also another way of removing the background - its slower than the magic wand but you can remove certain sections of the background and leave others if the magic wand tool is removing too much.

Just save it as a PNG. Transparent and lots of colors. Its the best of both worlds.

Yeah, but you can't check your png if you view them on a white bg. Kinda surprises you if you forget it...
