Lol, adding more ram wont harm your system in anyway. Well unless you buy slower ram or something, and plus don't buy alienware build your own. If you cant check out this site ibuypower.com its kind of like alienware but alot better check it out.

Its okay even if it does something you may remove it and like sell it if you'd like to or tweak it up.

and it was even better if you'd costumize it yourself... now you might have a 8600 GTS but an 8600 GTS from XFX or EVGA would be a lot better... and I mean a LOT

    few things to note

8600s suck given their cost. x1950 --- or 7900GS beat them bt around 10-20% overall. the 8600s also take up to a 50% performance hit in vista over XP.

RAM upgrades... they charge a freaking fortune. 2GB RAM of comparable quality to what they offer sells for around $70-80, they charge around $300-400 a GB when upgrading, just do it yourself.

another thing. In vista I don't really notice a huge difference between 2GB and 4GB RAM installed, though admittedly I don't play the RAM hungry games(aka battlefield and up com) Regardless RAM is one of the easiest things to install and it drops in price(in theory) by around half each year or so. If you need more it's a matter of sitting on your ass and clicking "order" waiting 2 days and then popping open your case and installing RAM(literally takes around 30-90seconds depending on your case)

also FYI, intel's next gen of CPUs is out in november as is nVidia's GPUs. Intel's next chipset is also out in september. Basically every part in your system will be "obsolete" within 2 months.

anyway the system you configured is worth around $800 or so with 2GB RAM and let's just say $900 with 4GB.

    Merged Post:

in his case it wouldn't but there are instances where adding RAM could toss your system into using a single channel memory configuration over the dual channel configuration(cutting memory bandwidth by as much as 50%) also depending on the chipset in the system more RAM could hinder overclocking potential.

you probably shouldn't listen to me though as I'm not a fan of Dell(the owner of Alienware) and don't believe in paying top dollar for a system which has minimal quality controller and a case with a cheap looking plastic shell.

this still just stands out to me

Trust me, you dont need a huge brain to put some parts together. But you can save a lot of money. Like xlink said, AW charges way to much to upgrade the ram. And vista 32 will only see 3gb of ram if im correct. So we can help you choose the parts, and you can pay some guy in a PC store to put it all together for like 50 bucks, and you can save yourself a couple hundred bucks, and use it to buy a bigger monitor, a better keyboard and crap like that.

Btw im not rich and I bought an alienware. Im only 16 but its called saving up money. Also you can get one for like $60 a month(2x broadband internet). If you know how to build a computer, go ahead its much cheaper.

If you don't know how and don't really want to know how, just buy the alienware. I bought an Alienware Laptop and it works perfect.

If your computer breaks I have heared many complaints how ibuypower gives you crap when your computer breaks. Pretty much everyone I know that owns a bought computer such as HP, Dell, etc... have ran into a problem somewhere. From many people I know that have a dell and something gone wrong, they fix it no questions asked, such as my uncles computer was struct by lightening and dell fixed it free of charge. (UPS fixes alienware)

I would suggest what xlink said about the memory... get 2 gigs with the computer, and if you want 4 gigs just get 2 from newegg.com
Its very easy to put in pretty much now matter how uncomputer friendly you are.

never be scared to build ur own pc! and if u dont know how to then simple! just get the people at the computer store ur buying the equipment from to do it! that way if anything go's wrong they MUST replace it! and TRUST me building ur own will kick ANY alienware computers ass!

P.S. i would drop ur ram down to 3gb as thats PLENTY sufficient.. and put the money towards a bettter GPU..atleast an 8800GTS if u want to be playing the upcomming DX10 games with ease

It is just their recomendation. They recommend the 2 gig, because pricewise it is not over the top, but still gets the job done.

just remember that they make money by buying cheap parts voer in asia repackaging them and selling it at a premium. then they finish off their branding efforts by placing it all into a pretty steal case with a relatively cheap plastic shell.
