This evening, i decided to join the GR-irc channel, the staff is spending a lot of time on their promotional campain, so i thought: let's try to help them achieve their goals. I joined the chat and the first thing i saw was someone named <Gurly|aids>, also , there was a conversation about aids going on. No, not a decent discussion or something.... Some people were making fun of it. Even after I told that a friend of mine has HIV, they continued the jokes, and even started joking about him. At a certain moment I just decided to ignore them and left for a couple of minutes, when I came back, the first sentence I saw was one containing the word kanker (which is dutch for cancer), the disease my grandmother died of.

After that i also received a pm containing the following

I decided to leave the chat, and I don't think i'll be back soon. If you want to attract people to the chat, I think you first have to prevent conversations like this, just wanted to let you know.

During the time, there was a lack of staff present.
Either way, your right, we'll start cracking down on it depending on other staff members.

The name Gurly|aids was there for a long time there was also Kirbir|aids, and gurly and kirbir were there themselves and didn't have a problem with it, gurly also was joking about that she had aids etc.

Hm yeah if a member was offended by it, it should have stoped. Also just as a side note, kanker in english, is just a kanker sore, so thats not something we can really prohibit people from saying.

just to inform US people etc, in dutch, the word 'kanker' is almost said by all younger people.

It indeed means cancer, and you can use it to express yourself better/intenser..

    so if you would say:

Ik ben kanker boos (english: i'm cancer angry)

just means that you are really mad, but some people are being offended by it.
