Whatever you want it to be, just don't make the overall width higher than 600px.
Believe it or not, there must be people out there with a 800x600 resolution monitor.
It's best if a website is viewable in all resolutions.

I think that is easier if use percent instead of size... So, the size doesn't matter ;)

Most probably because the resolution of his computer is 1024 x 768, I also have that but if someone has a slightly different resolution it could cause the horizontal scroll bar to come up which everyone knows is extremely annoying.

So when you're designing a template try to keep it at around 600px width as Nicasus said, the height of the template isn't as important. It won't matter all that much if you do go over 600px but just keep in mind (if you plan to use it on a website) you could loose visitors.

    Mmhm.
Do not touch 1024 x 768 as the size for your template, although it's the resoloution most people are set at when it comes to actually displaying it online it doesn't loook nearly as good.

There's actually a set size in the photoshop menu, when making a new document select from the dropdown menu 864x...something, good website size.

Look... No one took my opinion in count but doesn't matter... Make the logo about 750px, then, use the percentage to adapt it a the resolution of the user... So easy

That'd be easy to do if he was just coding a simple layout, but as he said he wants to make a layout in photoshop, which I'm pretty sure he'd want to be quite graphical, making that a little harder.

But coding is somthing you need to keep in mind if you do plan on making it into a website, I've got a few detailed posts in this section explaining how coding in XHTML and CSS works so if you'd like a look just say so and I'll link you.

Not at all, he can use the tags "div" and make a really nice website using Photoshop and CSS code.

BTW... The sites made in photohop are a little bit heavy sometimes, so, i think is better use it only for the graphic design.

If you want a good looking site, like, actually good, you HAVE to use photoshop or flash/psp etc. Find an example of a good looking site that doesn't.

Probably didn't explain what I meant so well, when just designing a layout in photoshop (if you don't know how the coding works) you could end up designing I site which would be extremely hard to use the method you suggested. If small images can be tiled to fit the length that's wanted but if it's anything like a lot of the website templates that are in the forum here, (which are very artistic and detailed) it will be hard to do that.

Generally when I design website templates I design a full CSS layout first and the design things in photoshop to fit in with it.

Not at all, obviously you're going to have a few images but there are plenty of good sites that are basically full CSS, with obviously a banner / logo and a couple of images around.

There's plenty of things you need to keep in mind when desiging a site, and loading time is a big one, if someone has to wait to long for your site to load then they are most likely going to leave. You don't need tons of graphics to make a good site, sometimes the most simple ones make the best sites.

One for example which I think is quite good is the slashTHREE layout:

    http://www.slashthree.com/v2/

As far as I can see, it's done completely in CSS besides the couple of images (banner and ads) and the background.

    http://www.youtube.com

Once again, only about 3 pictures on the front page

    http://www.google.com

Has nothing but their logo, it does what it's suppose to do so theres no point in having anything else.

Obviously sites done fully in flash with lots of graphics will look better, and most probably catch peoples eyes more, but there is many more things to consider and those sites I listed do look good, even if they do look more simple.

So no, you don't HAVE to use photoshop to design a good site.
