So, just out of curiosity, how important is updating your sound card?

I have a SB Audigy Audio [B800] and the last two times I tried to update, after the necessary restart my sound would be gone!

The volume button in the system tray in the bottom right would be gone, I can't do anything in the Sound and Audio devices proprieties window, etc.

I think I MIGHT be downloading the wrong update but still... I've been downloading the top driver update.

EVERY time I download the update, it uninstalls my current sound driver as it should, then restarts properly, then it installs the new driver but RIGHT before it completes completely it automatically restarts. Then the problems that I mentioned earlier occur.

I tried doing the update through Windows: going to Control Panel, Sound Speech and Audio Devices, Hardware then update it through there but the same thing happens, it restarts before completely finishing.

    ----

The whole reason I'm trying to update this sound card because when I play video games (right now CounterStrike: Source) sound is very important and when I'm using headphones or just the speakers I usually need the sound loud and it can become a little crackly so I thought updating it would help.

This computer is about 2-3 years old, during the first 2 years after I've had to run system recovery on my computer a couple of times I've had to update the sound card and had no problem.

In the past few months I just started having the problem and have been running system recovery JUST because of this sound card issue. (blue screen error of dead after uninstalling sometimes)

    SO...

    1. Should I be updating the card in the first place or is there another way to improve sound quality?
    2. Am I doing something wrong when it comes to updating the driver (wrong download, etc)

Thanks, I know that's quite a bit to read but I could really use some help with this issue!

A driver update typically won't fix 'crackly' sound, so your best bet is to go back to the known-working driver.
To fix the crackly sound, the best thing to do is get a new sound card.

If you just really feel a compulsive need to update your driver, a good starting point is your Windows Update. After it opens in IE, click "Custom" and see if there's anything under "Hardware." This doesn't always show you updates for your stuff, but it's an okay place to start.
