Okay so i've been reading a lot of stuff everywhere, and I don't know what these words mean.. If someone could give me a brief definition, in human terms, on what they each mean or what the part is/what it does/what it looks like etc.... I'de really appreciate it!

    1. SATA
    2. Overclocking
    3. IEEE or w/e..
    4. Controller Card
    5. RAID
    6. PATA Slot
    7. SLI
    8. PCI-Express
    9. CPU
    10. HeatSink Fan
    11. Optical Drives
    12. BIOS

Ok, So i know what most of these do, but I don't know what they are.. and rest vise versa.

For the person that gives me the most information that is helpfull to me, I will give 100 creds! :)

SATA - like type of hard drive and are faster then IDE hard drives (the ones that use a ribbon cable) Serial Advanced Technology Attachment they have faster transfer rates

Overclocking - making parts run faster than stock speeds

IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers?

Controller Card - peice of hardware that acts as interfacte between pc components

RAID - (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) storing data on multiple hard drives but pc see it as one drive since data is spread it's faster thena single drive

    PATA Slot - no clue

SLI - Scalable Link interface NVIDIA's method of combiningtwo gpu's (video cards) that give you better performance at higher resolutions with lots of AA/AF

PCI-Express - type of expansion slot on the motherboard where video cards are put

CPU - central processing unit (the processor)

HeatSink Fan - the thing that goes ontop of cpu that conducts heat away from the processor so it won't fry

Optical Drives - drives (hard drive, cd drive, floppy) i may be wrong

BIOS - basic input/output system - controls your pc funtions and you can make changes there (IRQ,Boot) and is where all overclocking is done (at least should be done for RAM/cpu's) not video cards

xelink can probably give technical scientific answers but that's all i got

^^ I need to correct him on a couple of things

PATA Slot - Same thing as IDE slot, which is the parallel interface used to mainly connect optical drives

Optical Drive - Any media that is read using lasers, so this is limited to CD/DVD drives

PS. can I please have some of those 200 credits? Please?

I think I pretty much go it right but thx for the 2 minor corrections =/

    and asking for creds..........

xelink basically will say stuff like the "capacitor goes into the circuit board and at +3.3v rating goes to the other capacitor that's 3a and powers......................yeah that

he's in a class right now so........

    200 sent to BTK.

I will send 100 more to someone who will give me a picture of what each of these looks like, AND/OR more technical information about them.

1 SATA=serial ATA. it's a type fo connection fore devices like harddrives and DVD drives. Works well, it's the present and the future. No real performance benefit(slight) over PATA but easier to manage cable wise and cheaper to make. might be used as an adjective to describe parts which use an SATA interface

    2 making ---- run faster

^bit extreme but^ also from like 4 years ago

3 firewire and some other ----.

4 card which controls stuff, normally associated with harddrives
    [IMG]

5 Redunadant array of independant disks. Various configurations of hardddrives for improved performance and/or reliability.

6 older version of SATA. uses large ribbons for cables. starting to be phased out.

7 SLI and crossfire are arrays of two GFX cards for improved performance. I find it's not worth it unless you're spending $600+ on cards as below that range you usually get better performance just buying one good card vs. two crappy cards
    [IMG]

8 a connection for various addons in a computer. has various transfer rates 16x 8x 4x 1x etc. also has various sizes. PCI-e 1x is small 16x is somewhat large. 4x is in between. Unlike older PCI, PCI-e is a serial connection meaning that if the data apthways aren't shared so you can plug stuff into a slot without it slowing or affect the other slots[IMG]
    ^ ^
    PCI-e x16/x8
    PCI-e x1
    PCI-e x1
    PCI-e x16/x8
    PCI
    PCI
    PCI

9 CPU= central processing unit. basically does most calculations in a computer.

10 a heatsink is a device used to cooler electronic components. Fans are often placed ontop of them to generate airflow so it can cool better
    [IMG]
    ^most overkill EVER^

11 optical drives are like CD drives and DVD drives and the like. basically any drive which uses light to read data.

12 BIOS= Basic input/output system. used in early PCs for generic activities. Now used for hardware management and settings. Usually associated with motherboards, but has also has carried over to other parts like video cards
